Tebay Lakes, Alaska, 1975
Photograph by Bruce Dale
The broken shell of a recently-hatched ptarmigan egg rests on the ground near Tebay Lakes, Alaska. The ptarmigan is a bird in the grouse family and chicks have feathers with intricate yellow, brown, grey, and chestnut patterns during the first weeks of life.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Alaska: Our Last Great Wilderness," June 1975, National Geographic magazine)
