Photographer Sam Abell

Hedgerows separate fields in Wales. From 1984 to 1990 there has been a net decline of more than 53,000 miles (85,295 kilometers) of hedgerows, mostly because they are not needed any more and have no economic value.

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Hedgerows," September 1993, National Geographic magazine)
