When 1995
Photographer Raymond Gehman

Engaging in a prescribed burn, this forestry technician sets flames among the trees in Sequoia National Park. The controlled heat from the fire opens cones and creates space for young trees to grow.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Essential Element of Fire," September 1996, National Geographic magazine)
