Photographer Bill Hatcher

Swift and icy cold, glacial-fed rivers were obstacles often faced by a trio of cyclists that biked a 700-mile (1,126-kilometer) section of the Alaska Range. This cyclist not only fought the current but also chances of drowning and hypothermia, which are far too common in the Alaskan backcountry.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Biking Across the Alaska Range," May 1997, National Geographic magazine)
