FAQ Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i. I N T R O D U C T I O N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The hit Television series "Gilligan's Island" has been remade into a Video Game! Normally, most games based on TV shows or movies pretty much suck. For that very reason, I was surprised to find that Gilligan's Island on the NES was very much like the show, the characters resembled the characters on the show, and the game was very similar to the show in general. Although the extraction of Ginger may bring the game down a bit, the game is a blast to play. There are 4 Episodes (a.k.a. Levels) you must go through in order to complete the game. You will be controlling the Skipper and Gilligan follows. Overall, Bandai did a superb job on doing a remake of Gilligan's Island in the form of a video game. Despite not including Ginger (The Movie Star), the game was well-done, and if you are a fan of the series (like myself), you will enjoy this game. On the other hand, if you are a Ginger fan, you may be somewhat disappointed to not find her here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. C O N T R O L S ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below I've listed all controls for the standard NES Controller Pad. To move Skipper around, press Up, Down, Left, and Right on the Directional Pad of your controller. Also use the D-Pad to move selections through menus. To do a jump in mid-air, press the A Button. Also use this button to continue speaking to characters as well as confirming selections in menus. In order to Punch or use a weapon (once you receive weapons), use the B button. This button may also be used for a cancellation function in menus. The Start button is used for confirmation when in menus and at the title screen. There is no pause feature in the game, so the Start button won't pause. By pressing the Select Button, you will gain access to the menu of the game. From here you can choose to do different things. Finally, if you press the A button very rapidly when inside Quicksand or Rivers, you can escape onto the other side. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. G A M E O V E R V I E W ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before you begin to play this game, I suggest reading through this section, as it contains many useful facts and tips that will help you along your way through the game. The following text below is a long excerpt from the Instruction Manual packed with the game. 1. Game description Gilligan's Island is an action/adventure game that tests your skills as you explore the uncharted tropical jungle. The Skipper and Gilligan must wander together throughout a vast maze of paths and underground caverns in an effort to discover a means of escaping from their island prison. To win they must successfully solve the four episodes of the game by finding the other members of the shipwrecked crew, the Professor, Mary Ann and Mr. and Mrs. Howell, and follow whatever instructions or clues they receive. 2. Game Controls Please see the above section for the game controls. 3. How to play the game To start the game press the Start button once and then press the start button again or the A button. The screen will then indicate what episode you are about to begin. Press the A button to begin the game. The game consists of four different episodes. Each episode begins with conversation among the members of the shipwrecked crew. When a flashing ball appears before the last sentence of dialogue on the menu screen, press the A button to continue reading. This conversation will sometimes provide valuable clues that will help you finish the episode. When the conversation is over, the game will begin. Playing the game In each episode you have a limited amount of time and food supplies with which to help the Skipper and Gilligan search the island for the various members of the shipwrecked crew. In order to finish each episode you must find the crew members in a specific order. When the Skipper touches them, the crew member can talk. In most instances (when you locate one) they will provide clues that let you know which character or object you need to search for next. Some of the clues are very obvious and some you will have to figure out for yourself. Helpful devices Along the path, the Skipper and Gilligan will find the following three types of helpful items. When the Skipper runs into one of these items he gains an extra unit in the menu screen. Bananas: These provide the Skipper with one extra level of food. Hourglass: This adds one minute to the time clock Rope: This allows the Skipper to retrieve Gilligan no matter where he is. To access the food and rope, you press select to enter the menu screen. Then use the control pad to select the desired item and press the A button to activate your choice. The Skipper should access the food when his energy is low and use the rope when he wants to retrieve Gilligan in a hurry. The other helpful device that is accessed through the menu screen is a map of the twisting island paths. At the beginning of each episode this map shows the location of the Skipper, Gilligan and one other member of the crew. As Gilligan and the Skipper find the other members of the crew, their new initials will also appear on the map. It is important to note that some of the underground caves do not appear on the map. These must be explored at your own risk. Dangers on the paths The Skipper and Gilligan need to watch out for many dangers as they search for their crew-mates. There are many moving objects that can harm the Skipper and cause him to lose strength. These include the many wild animals that roam the island as well as the local headhunters. The Skipper can also be harmed by falling boulders and stalactites or by tripping over rocks, fallen trees, and other obstacles in his path. There are also other natural dangers on the paths including rushing rivers, quicksand bogs, narrow bridges, sinkholes and sand flows that can use up valuable time by taking the Skipper and Gilligan far out of the way. When the Skipper and Gilligan get separated, a new clock appears which gives the Skipper two minutes to find his little buddy. He can either find him on foot or use the rope to retrieve him. It is important to note that the Skipper cannot get any clues from his crew members unless Gilligan is with him. 4. Episodes All four episodes are won by figuring out the clues given by the crew members. Some of the less obvious clues can be deciphered by trying to understand the different characters in the game. For example, the Professor would be the likely person to deal with anything scientific (i.e. electronics, archaeology, etc.) while Mr. Howell would be concerned with money. In general, anything that is lost can be found in the tree and certain items such as the transmitter and pieces of the stone tablet can be found in a blue treasure chest. Episode 1 As a tropical storm threatens to strike the island, the Skipper and Gilligan set out to collect the materials needed to build a protective hut. But first they must solve the mystery of the Howell's' missing ring. Once the ring is found, they learn from the Professor that a gorilla has stolen the transmitter and he needs them to get it back so he can fix it. Only after all of this can they cut down the tree and build the hut. Episode 2 Mary Ann has been captured by headhunters on the island. As Gilligan and the Skipper search for her they locate part of a stone tablet. When they bring it to the Professor they find out that he can't read it because Mr. Howell has borrowed his translation book. Before Mr. Howell will return the book, he insists that they find his missing golf ball. After finding the ball and returning the book to the Professor they finally set out again to find Mary Ann. But she can only be freed if they defeat the chief of the headhunters who has the key to her cage. Episode 3 The belief that the stone tablet is part of a larger tablet that might provide the coordinates of the island brings with it the hope of a rescue. Finding the other pieces of the tablet will prove no easy task, as one of them is guarded by a ferocious bear. But after the Skipper and Gilligan return the tablet to the Professor, he tells them he needs Mary Ann to make a cleaning solution from special nuts so he can read the inscription. Episode 4 As Gilligan and the Skipper search for the magical stone idol, Mary Ann asks him to find some coconuts so she can bake a pie. Meanwhile, Mrs. Howell has been captured by the headhunters. Once again Gilligan and the Skipper must get the key from the native chief. After freeing Mrs. Howell, they get some money from Mr. Howell and bring it to Mary Ann. In return she gives Mr. Howell her coconut pie. Only then does Mr. Howell inform Gilligan and the Skipper that Mary Ann has the sacred weapon they need to defeat the curse that is guarding the magical stone idol. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. W A L K T H R O U G H - E P I S O D E 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode 1 Objectives: - Find Mr. Howell's Wedding Ring - Defeat Gorilla to take back transmitter - Cut wood to build a hut The opening scene of Episode 1 will feature the crew of 6 (Skipper, Gilligan, Professor, Mary Ann, Thurston Howell III (a.k.a. - Mr. Howell), Lovey Howell (a.k.a. - Mrs. Howell). Ginger is not featured in this game for some reason. The Skipper will report to the crew that a tropical storm is due that night, and that they must construct a hut for protection. Gilligan will make a stupid (yet funny) remark about building an umbrella for shelter, then the crew will split up and do the chores they have been assigned. Map of Island ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | __________________ __________________________________________ | | |Tree Sand | | Water Bridge/Birds/Rocks | | | ------------------ ------------------------------------------ | | _______________||______||__ _||______ __||_____ | | | Hogs Mud | | Rocks| | Sand| | | --------------------------- --------- --------- | | __||______ _____||__ ___________||____ _____________||_ | | | Pit| | M | |Mud/Lions Sand| | Sand Monkeys| | | ---------- --------- ----------------- ---------------- | | ___||_____ _____||__ __||_____ _||________ | | | Hog| |Spikes | | H L| | Gorilla | | | ---------- --------- --------- ----------- | | __||___________||__________ _____________________________| | | Snakes Monkeys| | LEGEND | | --------------------------- | H = Mr. Howell | | ________________________||__ __||_____ | L = Mrs. Howell | | |Start Birds/Rocks | | P | | P = Professor | | ---------------------------- --------- | M = Mary Ann | | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First, head right past the rocks, and while doing so, some birds will fly overhead trying to harm you. Just jump to avoid them. Once you pass the rocks and come to the dead end, go up a screen into the next area. From here, you will need to find the professor first. From this screen, go right and avoid the monkeys that will jump from the trees. At the end, go down one screen to find the professor. You have to have Gilligan with you in order to have a real conversation with the professor, so if you lost Gilligan on the way, go back and get him or use a rope (rope not recommended yet). If Gilligan is with you, the Professor will tell you that Mrs. Howell is with Mr. Howell. Once you talk to the Professor, he will show up on the map. (Press select and press A on "Map" to view the map). Go back up a screen and left past the monkeys again. Continue going left past the snakes until you can go left no more. Head up one screen to find a lone hog (pig) running around. Avoid coming in contact with this hog or you will be harmed. Go up a screen and you will see a pit that leads to an underground cave. You don't need to go here now, so pass it (making sure Gilligan doesn't fall inside). Go up another screen and go right from there. You will find several hogs roaming around here, so be very careful and try not to get hit. Right after the hog area, you will find a path leading down (right before the mud pit). Go down this path to find Mary Ann behind a log. Jump over the log and make sure Gilligan is with you. Talk to Mary Ann and she will tell you that Mr. Howell has lost something. Jump back over the log and leave this screen. From here, there are 2 ways to get to Mr. and Mrs. Howell. I am going to describe the shorter way. From where you left Mary Ann, go right and through the mud pit (you travel slowly through the mud pit). Once past the mud pit, go up a screen to find water. Position yourself to the very top and very edge of the water. Then jump in, and immediately start pressing A as quickly as possible. While pressing A, also hold Up on the D-Pad so you will be pushing against the current. If you're lucky, you will make it out onto the other side, and Gilligan will follow (Gilligan cannot be sucked down the current if Skipper doesn't). Once past the water, you will come to a pathway leading south. Go down the pathway to a new screen with a bunch of rocks. Jump over the rocks and go down one screen. From here, go right to find some Quicksand. Jump in and when you get to the middle of the sand. Press the A button very quickly to wade through the sand onto the other side (this is the toughest material to walk through, it will take a long time to go through the sand). Once past the sand, go down 1 screen to find Mr. Howell and Mrs. Howell. Talk to Mr. Howell (when you have Gilligan) and he will tell you that he's lost his Wedding Ring. If you talk to Mrs. Howell (with Gilligan), she will tell you that she is not speaking to Mr. Howell on a count of anger that he lost the ring. Now it's time to find the ring. Go up a screen and go left through the sand again by pressing A rapidly (same way you did before). Go up one screen after passing the sand to find a bunch of rocks again. Jump over them and go up another screen. From here, go left and go to the top of the water. Jump in and rapidly press A to wade through the current as you did before. s Once on the other side of the water, go down a screen. Turn left and head back through the mud pit again. Once past the mud pit, you will find a path leading up, take this path. Here, there are 2 rocks in front of a long pit of Quicksand. Hop into the sand and once in the middle, press A quickly to successfully (yet slowly) wade through the thick sand. Once out of the sand, go left a bit to come to a tree. If you talked to the Professor, Mary Ann, and the Howells (in that order), Gilligan will climb the tree and find the ring up in a Bird's nest. The Skipper will order Gilligan to come down or Mr. Howell will suspect him (Skipper) of stealing it. Gilligan then jumps down and you will have the ring in your inventory. Head back to Mr. Howell (Through the sand, down a screen, right, through the mud pit, up one screen, right, through the water, down a screen [before bridge], past the rocks, down a screen, right, through the sand, and down one screen). Talk to Mr. Howell and he will thank you and as a reward give you some of his finest Caviar. That finishes off the first objective of Episode 1. Talk to Mr. and Mrs. Howell again before leaving and they will both tell you that they heard a sound over by the Professor. Now it's time to head over in the professors way. Before doing so, head over to Mary Ann and she will give you a clue as to what's going on. Make your way back down to almost the beginning of the level (one screen above the bottom of the level). I suggest reading your map to find your way back to the Professor. Once you reach him, he will inform you (if you have Gilligan with you) that the Monkey and Gorilla have stolen the transmitter and that you must retrieve it back. The Professor will give you a Club (weapon) to use against the Gorilla over the bridge. The club will be automatically equipped once you receive it. Use the B Button to use your new weapon. Now it's time to head over the bridge to find that gorilla. From where the Professor is, go up one screen and head left (avoiding the monkeys). Go up a screen and carefully jump over the 4 sets of spike strips laid out in your path (Gilligan sort of distracts you here, so try and focus on your jumping more than on Gilligan's maniac jumping). Once past the spike strips, go up one screen and go right a bit to find a mud pit. Wade through the mud and on the other side you will find several lions who leap towards you and do harm. Avoid them as best as possible and continue going right until you come to a path leading upward. Go up the path (right before the Quicksand pit) and jump over the rocks. Head up another screen to find some water to the right. Go to the top, jump in and press A quickly to swim through the water to the other side. Continue right and a bridge will soon appear. On the sides of the bridge lead down to the underground cave, so make sure you don't fall down there. While crossing the bridge, birds will swoop down and attack you and boulders will roll toward you from both directions, both trying to knock you off the bridge. Stand your ground and jump over the birds and boulders as best as you can until you eventually make it to the other side. At the end, go down a screen and right a little to make your way through another Quicksand Pit (press A repeatedly and quickly to get through the sand). On the other side, take the downward path and venture left past the monkeys. There will be a flowing bed of Quicksand up ahead, make your way through it in the same fashion you would the water. After you get to the other side, take the path leading down to meet face to face with the Gorilla. This Gorilla is a tough cookie to defeat, and it will take several shots to the head with the club to defeat him. The key to destroying this monster of a beast, is to continually hit him on the head to stop him from hitting you. Occasionally, the gorilla will get up, walk backward and stand on 2 feet and pound his chest like Tarzan. Continue the "beating of the head" process until the Gorilla finally gives up and leaves a blue treasure chest behind. Go over to it and open it to find the transmitter (which is amazingly in tact and hasn't been damaged at all). The Skipper will order Gilligan to take the transmitter to the Professor. Gilligan then clumsily steps on the transmitter and breaks it. Although the transmitter is broken, you must still take it back to the Professor to fix it. Take the same path back to the professor as you did to come to this area, and use the on screen map to help you on your way back if you haven't memorized the island map already. Once back at the Professor, he will give you a saw in exchange for the transmitter. You will not equip the saw. Instead, you will still be using your club and will only use the saw when you get to the tree. The final objective is to cut wood for the hut (which was originally the plan until these matters got in the way). From the professor, go up one screen then left past the monkeys. This time, continue to go left all the way past the snakes until you come to the end. Go up a screen to find the lone hog again, avoid him and then go up another screen to find the pit leading into the underground tunnel. Pass this pit (keeping Gilligan in tact) and head up the path. Venture right to come to the "High Hog" area. Avoid the hogs until you come to the path leading up. Take the path north to find 2 rocks and a Quicksand pit. Jump into the sand and press A quickly to wade through the sand and go left on the other side until you come to the tree you found Mr. Howell's wedding ring in. If you still have Gilligan with you, you will cut down the tree automatically. If you don't have Gilligan with you, use a rope to call him or go back and find him, otherwise you can't cut down the tree. Now take the same path back down that you came from. Use your on screen map until you make your way down to the bottom screen where you started this Episode. Go left, past the rocks and avoiding the birds until you are back where you first started. Once here, you will build the hut (which you won't be able to see on screen, it just magically appears the next morning). You will then view a cinema of them waking up in the morning to find their hut floating in the water because the spot Gilligan picked out was too close to the shore. That ends the first Episode of 4 of the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- W A L K T H R O U G H - E P I S O D E 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode Objectives: - Find Stone Tablet - Find Mr. Howell's Golf Ball to get Translation Book - Return book to Professor to translate stone tablet - Defeat Headhunter chief to save Mary Ann The opening scene will show the gang (excluding Mary Ann) huddled around, and Gilligan comes running up to proclaim that 4 strong head hunters have kidnapped Mary Ann. Gilligan also exclaims that he tried to stop them but hit his head on a rock and passed out. The Skipper will then say that the crew must do the best they can to save Mary Ann, and you and Gilligan are left to play this Episode. From where you start, go right and wade through the mud pit. Soon after, you will be faced with a large body of water. Position yourself near the top of the water and jump in and immediately start pressing A quickly to get across. When you come to the pathway leading downward, take it south. On this new screen, go right and through the rocks (don't go into the pit you come to). Continue going right past the wild hogs and go up a screen when you come to the end. From here, go right and cross the body of water by pressing A repeatedly and quickly once in the water. Once on the other side, continue going right until there is an opening leading south. Go down a screen and go right in this new area. You will come to a bridge with birds swooping down. Carefully cross the bridge, making sure not to fall, then on the other side go up a screen to find the Howells standing in front of a pit. Talk to Mr. Howell (when you have Gilligan with you) and he will inform you that he saw a stone tablet in the pit below. You must talk to him before entering the pit, or the stone tablet will not appear. Once he informs you of this, make sure Gilligan hops into the pit first, then follow in after him (if you don't have Gilligan, you can't get the stone tablet). Go left in here and through the mud pit. On the other side of the mud pit, you will find a blue treasure chest containing the stone tablet. If you have Gilligan with you, you will collect the tablet, if not you will have to find him or use the rope. Climb out of the same pit you came in and leave from where the Howells are. Go down one screen, and go left over the bridge again (avoiding the birds). Once over the bridge, take the upward path and head left. Cross over the body of water (Pressing A quickly), and then take the south path at the end. Avoid the wild hogs and go left, weaving in and out of the rocks (don't go into the pit). Once you come to the end of this area, go up one screen and cross back over the water you come to. Venture left and manage your way back through the mud pit until you come to your starting point of this Episode. Head down a screen and jump over the rocks. Make your way down another screen to find Baboons, once you pass these, you will find a path leading down, take it down to find the Professor. Make sure Gilligan is with you, then talk to the Professor. He will tell you that the stone tablet is in a foreign language, and that he will need his Language Book in order to translate it. He then informs you that Mr. Howell borrowed his book, and to go ask for it back. That finishes off the first objective of obtaining the stone tablet. Now, you must go back to where Mr. Howell is (use the on screen Map as a guide to get back there) and talk to him (with Gilligan behind you). He will tell you that he will only give you the book if you go and find his golf ball he lost. As before, Mr. Howell's lost item is in a tree. He will tell you that it's in the tree across the river, so it's time to head in that direction. From the Howells' area, go down 2 screens to find a Quicksand pit. Hop in and press A repeatedly to get across the pit. When you make it to the other side, head down a screen, and make your way left (past the rocks). Avoid being hit by the headhunters here, as there are a lot of them that will interfere with your journey. Continue past the first 2 openings leading up, until you come to the end of this area (where there is a 3rd path leading north). Take the path up a screen to find the tree where Mr. Howell's golf ball is located. Make sure you have Gilligan with you, otherwise you won't be able to get up the tree and retrieve the ball (because Skipper is too fat to climb the tree). Gilligan will climb the tree and retrieve the ball while making a remark saying if Mr. Howell hit his ball that far, he must not be a good golfer. Now you have taken care of your 2nd order of business. It's time to return the golf ball back to it's respective owner (Mr. Howell) and claim the Professor's Language book. Head back down a screen and follow the path you just came (to get to the tree) all the way back to where Mr. Howell is located (use the Map if you need help getting back). Mr. Howell will thank you (only if you have Gilligan with you, otherwise you won't be able to talk to him) and inform you that the Professor's Language book was boring and that Money is the "International Language." Make your way back to where the Professor is located (use the on screen Map if you get lost) and talk to him (when you have Gilligan with you). The Professor will then decipher the foreign message on the stone tablet and give you a club that one of the headhunters dropped. Your final order of business is to defeat the headhunter chief. The only method to get to the headhunters' lair is via a waterfall, specifically the waterfall in the beginning of the episode. From where the Professor is, go up a screen and then head left (past the baboons). Go up another screen at the end and hop over the rocks. Head north up another screen to return where you started. From here, go right and through the mud pit until you come to the water. Hop in, but don't cross it (instead let it take you down). You will land inside of the headhunters' lair. Head right past all of the rocks and hit the headhunters here on the head with the club. Go all the way right (hitting headhunters and jumping over rocks) until you reach the end of this area. Go down a screen into the next area where you will be going left doing the same thing (hitting headhunters and jumping over rocks). Go down a screen at the end of this area to meet up with the chief headhunter. There is one particular strategy to beating this guy. You must hit him square on the head from the side in order to get a direct hit in. To do so, move over to the left or right side of the chief and swing your club in order to hit him on the head and make him dizzy for a second. Continue to do this a few times until he will eventually be defeated. Upon doing so, he will leave behind a blue treasure chest with the key to Mary Ann's jail cell inside. You must have Gilligan with you to get the key, and once you have it in your possession, leave this room and go straight up 2 screens to find Mary Ann locked up in her cell. Gilligan will try to open the cell door but got the wrong keyhole, so Skipper opens the door instead and rescues Mary Ann from the awful headhunters. Then Gilligan makes a funny remark saying that if she wasn't rescued, nobody would be able to cook them food. That ends the 2nd Episode, and you will view a closing cinema showing a headhunter princess fall in love with Gilligan due to his heroism and naturally, Gilligan is upset about it (In case you haven't noticed, this is based on one of the episodes of Gilligan's Island). That fully completes Episode 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- W A L K T H R O U G H - E P I S O D E 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode Objectives: - Locate Mr. Howell - Retrieve Mr. Howell's Swimsuit from Mrs. Howell - Take Stone Tablet piece to Professor to get formula - Take cleaning solution formula to Mary Ann - Find nuts for Mary Ann to make solution - Take solution to the Professor - Defeat Bear for last piece of the stone tablet The opening cinema shows the whole gang together discussing the stone tablet found in the previous Episode. After the Professor says the stone tablet piece is some sort of illustration, Gilligan suggests that maybe the other pieces of the tablet will make up a map of the island. The Professor agrees that Gilligan may possibly be correct. The Professor then orders the gang to find stone tablet pieces, and you are left to play. From where you start, start off by going right. Jump over the spike strips when you come to them, as well as the rocks. Also beware of the local headhunters roaming around in this area. A good punch in the face will send them crying for their mommy. Once you come to the end of this area, go up a screen into the next area and head right. Avoid the snakes on the ground here and continue going right (past the opening south) and through the mud pit, until you come to the end of this screen where you will find a path leading up, take it. Go straight up to the next screen as well to find Mrs. Howell (who is now alone). With Gilligan, talk to her and she will say she doesn't know where Mr. Howell has gone to. Leave this screen now (south) and go right, and into the mud pit. Cross the pit and watch out for the headhunter on the other side. Venture right and go up a screen to find the Princess Head Hunter again. She can harm you, so don't be fooled. Avoid her as best as possible and move up to the next screen. You will find Mary Ann here. Talk to her when you have Gilligan with you and she will inform you that Mr. Howell has fallen into one of 2 pits on either side of Mary Ann. The correct pit you need to enter is the one on the left side of Mary Ann. Make Gilligan jump in first, then follow him in. You will be dropped into an underground cave. Leave the room you are dropped in and then head right into the mud pit when you exit. Wade through the thick mud and beware of the headhunters on the other side. Punch the headhunters in the face and then walk up a screen into the next room with a ladder. Climb the ladder to move up to the next level of this underground cave. Go left and hop over the spike strips while punching any headhunters that get in your way. When you come to the opening leading south, take it. In this area, swim across the water (Press A repeatedly). Then cross the mud pit while avoiding the swoops from the bats flying overhead. Hop over the rocks and go down a screen to find Mr. Howell. Make sure Gilligan is with you, and talk to Mr. Howell. He will ask you to go and fetch his swimsuit from Mrs. Howell. Exit the cave and head all the way back to where Mrs. Howell is located (use your on screen map if you get lost). Once you reach Mrs. Howell, talk to her once you have Gilligan with you. She will give you Mr. Howell's swimsuit for you to take back to him. Now head all the way back to the cave where Mr. Howell is located. When you reach him, give him his swimsuit (only if Gilligan is with you) and he will reward you with a stone tablet to take to the Professor. Head up a room to leave from Mr. Howell and you will be faced with the flowing water again. This time, just jump in but don't swim across, instead, let the current take you down, past the Princess Head hunter and into the next screen. Once here, quickly swim over to the right (Press A rapidly) and get out of the water. Continue right all the way to the end of this area, then go up a screen to find the Professor. When you have Gilligan with you, talk to the Professor and give him the Stone Tablet piece Mr. Howell gave you. He will then hand you a solution formula and tells you to take it to Mary Ann so she can cook it up. From where the professor is, go down a screen and the left in this area. Avoid the lions running around here and make your way to the flowing water. Jump in and let the current take you down and you will land in a new area. From here, go left (avoiding the tigers) and hop over the rocks and spike strips. Wade through the mud pit at the end of this area and then go up a screen into the next area. Go right and over the log and into another mud pit, on the other side of the pit, continue going all the way right (past the rocks and log). Head up a screen at the end and from here go right through a small mud pit and beware of the headhunters on the other side. Pass them and go up 2 screens to find Mary Ann. Talk to her (when you have Gilligan with you) and she will tell you that she needs some nuts in order to make the cleaning solution. She tells you that they are across the river, past the caves, and in the tree. Leave from this area (go down a screen) and you will find the Princess Head Hunter again. Ignore her and jump into the flowing water and let it take you down a screen. From here, swim to the left side and get out of the water and drop into the pit to go in an underground cave. Once you land, hop over the 4 spike strips and continue going left. Go past the opening above and watch out for falling coconuts. Go down a screen at the end of this area and then go left. Make your way to the end of this screen (past the Quicksand pit) where you will find a ladder to get out of the cave, climb it. Hop out to the right over the spike strip and the rocks. Beware of roaming tigers here and continue going left. Head south a screen at the end to find the tree. Make sure Gilligan is with you so he can climb the tree and find a nut for Mary Ann. Once you've acquired the nut, leave this screen, and go all the way right (past the pit you came from) until you can go no farther. Head down a screen and then go through the mud pit to the right. Watch out for the wild hog running about and make your way to the end of this screen, where you will find a Quicksand river and some rats. Jump into the sand and it will take you back to the area you were in before. Go right (wading through the sand) and watch out for the local headhunters on the other side. Punch them in the face to eliminate them from your way and go north a screen at the second opening you come to. Go past the Princess Head Hunter again, up a screen to find Mary Ann. Talk to her when you have Gilligan with you and she will make the solution for you. She then commands you to take the solution back to the professor. Go down a screen and into the water, take it down a screen then get out of the water to the right. Go all the way right and take the path leading up to find the professor. The Professor will give you the 4th piece of the stone tablet as well as a club. You will now have to get the 5th and last piece of the tablet, which is guarded by a ferocious bear that you must defeat. Leave this room and go left back to where the flowing water is. Swim through it to get on the other side (Press A rapidly) and then drop into the pit here. From here, go right over the spike strip to the end of this area. Head down a screen to find a mud pit and roaming hogs. When you find an opening leading south, take it. In this area there are spike strips you must jump over and then a mud pit that needs to be waded through. Once out of the pit, go down a screen to find the bear that is guarding the last stone tablet piece. He is rather simple to defeat. Right when you encounter him, don't move at all, the bear will come to you. When he gets up to your face, hit him on the head with the club and he will cower back to where he first was. Continue this process about 8 times and he will eventually stop attacking you and leave the blue treasure chest behind. When you have Gilligan with you, open it to find the last tablet piece. You and Gilligan will take the piece to the Professor and then you will view the closing cinema. The crew will put all the pieces together, and Gilligan will place the last piece inside. The Skipper then realizes this was the sign Gilligan was working on and Gilligan says he made the sign a few days ago and put it outside for everyone to see, then it disappeared. The Skipper then angrily says "Yes but how is this sign supposed to get us off the island!?" And once again, Gilligan has screwed up the chances for rescue. That will finish off Episode 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- W A L K T H R O U G H - E P I S O D E 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode Objectives: - Get coconuts for Mary Ann - Defeat Chief Headhunter to rescue Mrs. Howell - Inform Mr. Howell of Mrs. Howell's rescue - Give the money to Mary Ann to start the fire - Tell Mr. Howell that dinner won't be for awhile - Go back to Mary Ann to get a morsel of pie for Mr. Howell - Take pie back to Mr. Howell - Retrieve the "Secret Weapon" from Mary Ann - Visit Professor - Break Evil Curse on the stone idol The opening cinema will show Skipper ordering Gilligan to go and fetch some fish for dinner. Then, while Gilligan is gone, the Professor exclaims to everyone that the Native Chief of the island has informed him that there is a stone idle somewhere on the island that will grant 1 wish to it's holder. Mary Ann then asks why they didn't tell Gilligan, and the reply is that Gilligan always seems to wreck the one wish they all have, which is to get off the island (what a surprise). Gilligan then returns and you are left to play. From where you start, go right and avoid the monkeys jumping around here. Head north up the first path you come to and then go right. Wade through the Quicksand pit and beware of the 2 animals on the other side of it. At the end, go up a screen to find flowing water and Mary Ann behind it. Swim across the water (Press A quickly) and talk to Mary Ann (when you have Gilligan with you) and she will tell you that she wants to make a pie and that you must get her some coconuts from the tree across the river. Hop back into the flowing water and take it down to the next screen. Go right and watch out for the headhunters here. Continue going right past the rocks and when you find an opening leading south, take it to find the tree. Make sure Gilligan is with you and he will climb the tree and find the coconut (he will say 'nut' but it's really the coconut). Go up a screen and then go back left past the rocks and headhunters. Go down at the end of this screen and head left (jumping over the spike strips and avoiding the wild hogs running about). Take the north path you come to and cross the Quicksand pit again (beware of the animals on the other side of the pit) and then go up a screen at the end. Swim across the water and talk to Mary Ann (when you have Gilligan with you). She will tell you that she is ready to cook the pie, but she needs a fire. She also tells you that Mrs. Howell (Lovey) has been taken by the headhunters and then she will give you a club to defeat the chief headhunter. Hop into the river and take it down to the next screen. Go right past the sand and up into the next screen where you will find the Princess Head Hunter in between some spikes. Hop over the spikes and go up a screen where you will find a mud pit and a pit behind it. Wade through the mud and drop into the pit to be taken to an underground cave. Hop over the 4 spike strips and go up a screen. Go right and hop over the 2 hills of dirt. Avoid the snakes and swim through the water. Go up a screen and wade through the Quicksand pit and climb the ladder to exit this part of the cave. Once you exit, go through the mud pit and south 1 screen. Now, jump over the rocks and the spike strip then go down another screen. From here, go left (avoiding the baboons) until you come to a path leading south, take it to find the Headhunter Chief. Make sure Gilligan is with you and then the battle will begin. You will be using the same strategy you used to defeat him the last time: hit him on the head by moving to the side of him. Continue to hit him on the head until he will exit and leave the blue treasure chest behind. With Gilligan, open the chest to receive the key to Mrs. Howell's jail cell. Go down a screen to find Mrs. Howell locked up. Gilligan will try to open the door, but fail. Then Skipper will open the door correctly and Mrs. Howell will thank you and tell you to report her rescue to Mr. Howell who is just nearby. Leave this room, and exit the room you defeated the Chief in. From here, go left and enter the first north path you come to. You will see Mr. Howell behind a flowing bed of Quicksand. This quicksand is flowing upward, so make sure you press Down when wading through it. Once on the other side, talk to Mr. Howell (when you have Gilligan with you) and he will be so happy, he'll write you a check for $1,000,000. Now, it's time to head back and see Mary Ann. Follow your map and use the underground tunnels to get you back to where Mary Ann is. When you have Gilligan following you, talk to her and she will say that you have the perfect thing to make a fire, the money! Give it to her and then she will tell you to tell Mr. Howell that dinner won't be for awhile. Hop back into the water and take it down to the next screen. Head right (hitting all headhunters on the head that get in your way). Head north using the first path you come to. Wade through the Quicksand pit (Press A quickly) and then go up another screen. Hop over the spikes (ignoring the Princess Head Hunter) and go north 1 screen to find a mud pit and a pit behind it. Wade through the mud and then hop back into the pit to land in an underground cave. Hop over the 4 spike strips and go up a screen. Go right (jumping over the 2 dirt hills and avoiding the snakes) and swim through the water. Once on the other side, continue right and take the north path. Head through the Quicksand pit and then go up a screen to head into the new area. Walk through the mud pit and go south 1 screen. Jump over the rocks and spike strips in this room and go down another screen. Go left (avoiding the baboons) until you come to an opening that leads upward. Take it when you find it and you will see Mr. Howell again. Go through the Quicksand bed (remember, the current is going up not down) and talk to Mr. Howell (if you have Gilligan with you). Mr. Howell will explain that he is famished and must have food right away and asks if you would be kind enough to snag a morsel of Mary Ann's pie. So, now it's back to Mary Ann. Follow your steps back to Mary Ann (using the on screen map to help you). Talk to her (when you have Gilligan with you) and she will give you some pie to take to Mr. Howell. Head back to Mr. Howell the same way you did before (you should be getting used to the paths now that you have been going back and forth so much). Talk to Mr. Howell when you have Gilligan with you, and he will tell you that Mary Ann has the Secret Weapon in her possession. Head back to Mary Ann again (using your on screen map if you get lost) and talk to her when you have Gilligan with you and she will give you the Secret Weapon you need to break the curse on the idol. Go all the way back (using your map) past Mr. Howell and to the end of the area afterwards to find the Professor, talk to him (once you have Gilligan) and he will say that according to his research, you can drive the evil curse into the ground using the secret weapon. Head back to Mr. Howell, go through the quicksand bed and cross the bridge (avoiding the rocks). Drop into the pit here and then when you get to the bottom, go down 2 screens and go right. Hop over the spikes and rocks here and then hop into the water at the end. It will take you to a skeleton (which I assume is the evil curse). Please, if you can figure out any more on how to defeat this thing, let me know ASAP (dallas@dodgerstats.com). I have tried almost 30 times now and each time I end up dying and I am clueless as what to do. Any help is appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. I T E M / E N E M Y L I S T ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below I've listed all the items and all of the enemies I could recall during my time of playing this game. If, for some reason, you find an error in any one of these listings, or you have an addition that I must have missed, please drop me a line at dallas@dodgerstats.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item List ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rope: You can find Rope lying about in any area at anytime. It will appear randomly. Using the Rope, you can make Gilligan appear at anytime, anywhere. This can be very useful when you need to talk to someone or need something to be done and don't have Gilligan with you. Bananas: These are used as food items, and (as the Rope) they will appear randomly in the game. By eating some food, you will replenish at least 2-3 hearts on your life meter. Use the food whenever you are running low on your life meter. Nuts: There are 2 types of Nuts you will be collecting in the game. You will collect a normal nut (that Mary Ann will use to make the cleaning solution) and you will collect a Coconut (that Mary Ann will use to make a Coconut Cream pie). These nuts can be found in the tree of the 2 islands you will be collecting them on, and only Gilligan can get them. Swimsuit: This is a one-time-only item, and it belongs to Mr. Howell. During the 3rd Episode, Mr. Howell will feel the urge to take a swim and request that you fetch is swimsuit from Mrs. Howell. This has no real purpose, other than proceeding in the game. Bill: In the 4th Episode, Mr. Howell will reward you with a $1,000,000 check for rescuing his wife from the Chief headhunter. Use this Bill to give to Mary Ann so she can use it to make a fire in order to cook dinner. This is another one-time-only item. Stone Tablet Pieces: There are a total of 5 stone tablet pieces which the crew think may be an illustration on how to get off of the island. You must collect these 5 pieces in order to proceed with the game, but in the end, it turns out the pieces make up nothing but a sign Gilligan made a few days ago. Caviar: During Episode 1, Mr. Howell will treat you with this item as a reward for finding his lost wedding ring. This item has no value nor any useful purpose whatsoever. In fact, it disappears once you complete the 1st Episode, so it's pretty much useless. Gold: Mrs. Howell will be the one who gives you this item. She gives it to you as a reward for rescuing her from the Chief headhunter in the 4th Episode. It is strictly a novelty item and has no real purpose (although it does have a pretty high value). Secret Weapon: Mary Ann is the carrier of this little item. It is used in the 4th Episode to defeat the evil curse on the stone idle so it can be used. You will only receive this in the 4th Episode, once you are near completion of the game. Club: You will be using the club as a weapon quite a bit throughout the game. The club will be used in all 4 Episodes to defeat the enemies in each Episode which are preventing you from proceeding in the game. For the first half of the game, the Professor will carry the club, but in the 4th Episode, Mary Ann has it in her possession. Saw: Another one-time-only item is the saw. It is used in Episode 1 in order to cut wood to build the hut. You will be using this saw on the Tree on the other side of the island in the 1st Episode to finish off that level of the game. You won't be seeing this item in any other Episodes afterwards. Blue Treasure Chest: The treasure chest is located all throughout the game, and it will always contain the most important items of each Episode (i.e. - Keys, Stone Tablet Pieces, etc.) You will mainly find these chests right after you defeat a main enemy in any Episode. Tree: The tree is a sort of symbol in the game. All lost items can always be found in the tree (i.e. - Mr. Howell's Golf ball, Mary Ann's coconuts, Mr. Howell's lost Wedding Ring, etc.) Gilligan is the only person capable of climbing the tree, so you must have him handy if you expect to proceed with the game. Hourglass: These will randomly appear (the same what the Food and Rope appear) throughout the game. They will add up to 1 minute onto your current time (whether it be normal time, or time to find Gilligan). If you are running low on time (or even if you aren't) it is good to collect these whenever you come to them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemy Listing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monkey: These creatures jump down (unexpectedly) from overhead trees and get in your path. Several of these creatures may jump all at once, or you may just encounter 1 or 2 at a time. Either way, they are a danger if you come into contact with them, so stay as far away as possible. Bear: The Bear is found only one time in the game, and he is guarding the 5th and final stone tablet piece in Episode 3. You will have to use the club to defeat him and collect the missing piece. Chief headhunter: This guy just doesn't know when to give up. First off, he will kidnap Mary Ann and you must defeat him then to save her. Then 2 Episodes later, he will kidnap Mrs. Howell, and you'll have to defeat him a 2nd time to rescue her. Both encounters will require the use of the Club in order to defeat this guy. Headhunters: You will find the local headhunters almost everywhere from the 2nd Episode and onward. They will be dresses differently at times, and some carry clubs, while others don't, but either way they will attack you if you don't do the same to them first. A good clean jab into the face will send these guys crying, or you can use the club on their heads if you happen to have it handy, either way will suffice well. Animal: These things are in the 4th Episode and appear in the same manner the tigers and lions do. They wait for you by mud pits and attack when you come out of the mud. Beware of these things when exiting mud or sand pits, as they will attack you easily due to their fast pace. Lions: These ferocious beasts roam around mud pits and love to attack you as you are coming out of one of the pits. Beware when you step out of a mud or sand pit, as there may be a lion waiting on the other side. The lions are very fast runners and cannot be defeated, but you can avoid them by switching out of the path of their run (e.g. - avoiding them all together). Tigers: I hate to sound like a broken record, but these things are exactly the same as the lions. The only difference is that the tigers have a set of stripes across them, other than that, their attacks are the same, as well as their avoidance. Baboons: Same deal as the monkeys, they swing out of trees and walk on the ground, and they love to attack you when you exit from a mud pit. These won't appear until around the 2nd or 3rd Episode, but beware of them when you do encounter them. Gorilla: The gorilla is in Episode 1 and has teamed up with a monkey, together they equal trouble. This nasty beast has stolen the Professor's transmitter (which is the only way off of the island) and it's your job to defeat this guy and bring it back. Unfortunately, once you do defeat him and find the transmitter in excellent condition, Gilligan ruins it all by stepping on the transmitter and breaking it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V. F R E Q U E N T L Y A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What happens when Gilligan gets hit by an enemy, does it affect you? A. No, Gilligan can get hurt as much as he wants to, but it in no way affects the Skipper (you) or your gameplay. The only reason why Gilligan _can_ get hurt in this game is so you can have the sole privilege of laughing at him when he falls. Q. Do the mud and/or sand pits make you immune to attacks? A. Yes, whenever you are inside of a mud pit or a Quicksand pit, no enemy can hurt you (including bats). Q. How come I can't do a certain thing that you say in your walkthrough? A. Did you remember to follow my walkthrough _exactly_ as it is shown? Keep in mind that you _must_ talk to each person I've listed in my walkthrough in order to proceed with the game. It's just the way the game was made. Q. Why is it that when I take some of the rivers or Quicksand beds to a new area, I lose some of my energy? A. That's pretty much the price you have to pay for taking the shortcut instead of the long way. On some of the rivers and sand beds you won't lose any energy when you take them, others you will lose energy every other time you use them, and then there are some where you lose energy every time. If you can't stand to lose energy, then you will be forced to use your on screen map and take the long way out. Q. How do I defeat the Chief Headhunter? A. The Chief headhunter is actually the toughest enemy in the game, as he continually knocks you down when you try to attack him. The only way you know that your counterattacks are successful is when the Chief begins to get dizzy. In order to do so, you must hit him from the side to get a direct hit in. Continue this until he eventually gives up. Q. Aren't there any codes for this game, I need them! A. See the "Codes/Secrets" section in this guide for Game Genie and normal codes. The Game Genie codes can be pretty useful considring the last part of the game is so tough. Q. Hey, what happened? I am stuck at the last part of the game and your walkthrough doesn't cover it!? A. To be honest, I am stuck myself, I can't figure out what to do, and I constantly keep dying. I've tried at least 30 times and cannot pull it off. If you know what to do, please let me in on the secret. Q. Isn't there anything else to do in the game? A. This game is rather short, I admit it. There are a total of 4 Episodes, but each _does_ provide a great challenge to gamers of all types. Despite the shortness of the game, the difficulty surely makes up for that. Q. How come Ginger wasn't included in this game? A. To be honest, I don't know why Bandai chose not to include her. It could possibly be that the actress that played Ginger Grant on the Television series, did not wish to participate in the game and didn't agree to be included. That's just my guess, however. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VI. C O D E S / S E C R E T S ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Extra Time: If you lose Gilligan, the clock will change to 2:00 allowing you time to find Gilligan. You can let this time run out and then use a rope to retrieve Gilligan and your normal clock will remain the same as it was before you lost Gilligan. You should only attempt this, however, if you have a good stock of rope.
