*1.0 Ridge Racer *
******************

Well, first i want to say that this is an easy game, but you should not start
at the "hard" game setting, because you can't change the difficulty later on.
Even I started with the "easy" settings, although I have (or have played) all
Ridge Racer games except the one for Nintendo 64. My first game to
PlayStation was also Ridge Racer 1...

1.1 History / Previous Games

Everything started in 1993 when Namco unleashed the arcade game called Ridge
Racer. There was no doubt about wich console this little wonder was going to
be used on. Ridge Racer was (when it was released) the most realistic racing
game ever made. This is what it says on the back of the box:
"...Incredible realism..." You just laugh at that nowadays. Fortunaly, Namco
didn't remove the totaly unrealistic steering, because the control of the
cars have been total in EVERY RR game.
There was only four cars and four tracks available at the start, but as you
proceeded through the game you got the hold of your opponent's cars and the
mighty 13th Racing special car. The courses could also be played reversed.
The first games that came out on PlayStation was, among others, RR, Tekken
and Wipeout. PlayStation, and with it RR, came out some time in 1994 in
Japan, and 1995 here in Europe.

I don't know exactly, but about '96 the sequel to RR, Ridge Racer Revolution
was released. It wasn't really a sequel, just a updated version of the first
RR game. It was only some new tracks and one new car; the Angel Car.

In about '97 the real sequel came, Rage Racer. A very long-lasting game in
wich we saw the first sympthoms of the "Gran Turismo Syndrome" (when you won
a race you got a amount of money for wich you could upgrade your car, or buy
a completley new one). In this game you could also repaint your car. There
was many cars in many variations, but the game felt quite... 16-bit. Much of
this depended on the lame behind-the-car-view and the dark colours... It was
fun all the time it lasted, but after you cleared the whole game, it was not
fun at all.

In 1999 R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 came. It had 321 cars, and it was more a
racing/RPG than a regular racing game. R4 was also a very long-lasting game,
but the first levels was too darn easy. The graphics was quite pretty, but
the cars were not that "shiny", except for in the replays.

1.2 Controls

Note! This is the standard settings. You can change them in the Options menu.

*= One of the new features of the Dualshock2 is the analog buttons (the
harder you push the buttons, the more you steer, accelerate, etcetra), and
RRV uses this feature on acceleration, braking and steering in Analog mode.

Digital Controls:

Direction buttons: Steer left/right.
X-button: Accelerate.
Square button: Brake.
Triangle button:        Change view. There are two views to choose from;
Behind the car, or inside the car.
Circle button: Nothing.
R1 button: Shifft up (Manual transmission only!).
L1 button: Shift down (Manual transmission only!).
R2 button: Rearview.
L2 button: Rearview.
Start button: Pause Menu. Here you can choose from: Cancel, Sound,
Restart (only in some game modes) and Exit.
Select button: Nothing.

Analog Controls:

Direction buttons: Steer left/right.*
X-button: Accelerate.*
Square button: Brake.*
Triangle button: Change view.
Circle button: Nothing.
R1 button: Shift up.
L1 button: Shift down.
R2 button: Rearview.
L2 button: Rearview.
R3 stick Nothing.
L3 stick Steer left/right.
Start button: Pause menu.
Select button: Press and hold down Select in the Analog mode to get
a diagram wich shows how much you are accelerating,
                        braking and steering.

*2.0 Cars*
**********

There are six standard cars plus one upgraded version of each car. If you
beat the time trail records in Extra Time Attack, you'll get the Duel mode,
in wich you can race against two "classic" RR cars (13th Racing and Angel
Car),and two new cars. When you've raced 3.000 kilometers you'll get the Pac-
Man car and a new Pac-Man race. If you win that race, you'll get four ghosts
racing on scooters; Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde.

2.1	Standard Cars

These cars are not tuned in any way, they come directly from the
manufacturer. When youve cleared the Standard GP with a car, just start a
new Standard GP to get a new car.

Drift Cars:

Kamata Fiaro
The classic car from RR1, RRR & R4. In RR1 it was the F/A Racing's and RT
Ryukyu's cars, in R4 it was called Terrazi Ambitious (but then it was a
grip-car). It's got the greatest handling of the standard drift cars.

Model: Fiaro
Manufacturer: Kamata

Power layout: FR

Danver Toreador
An American car in every way... It got soft suspension, only four gears and
it's got extreamly much horses under the hood. This car is one of the hardest
handling cars EVER in a RR game! By the way... It's the heaviest car in the
game.

Model: Toreador

Rivelta Solare
A car with hard steering but good acceleration and great topspeed. Although
the steering is tough, it's not harder than the Danver Toreador, depending on
that this car has harder suspension.

Grip Cars:

Kamata Fortune
A front wheel drive car wich is the lightest car in the game. It's got very
good handling but the acceleration and topspeed is the... ehm... worst in the
game. It looks like a Honda EG Civic.

Rivelta Mercurio
A very cool looking car. This all wheel driven car has average handling,
its very fast, and the acceleration is quite good too... Its just an
average car... It looks like a Ferarri 360 Modena.

Model: Mercurio

Himmel E.O.
Oh! This is a hard handling car! The engine is placed in the back of the car
and its also rear wheel driven wich makes it quite hard to handel. This is
the fastest standard car.

Danver Spectra
This is a very cool car, but its handling is poor. The topspeed is pretty
good and the acceleration is just fabulous, it got the best acceleration in
the game.

Top speed: 400 km/h

Rivelta Crinale
Yes! It's the classic car from RR1. And it looks the same! Well, it is much
better graphics, though. Unfortuneatly the handling is NOT as good as in the
first game. In RR1 it was called 13th Racing.

Pac-Man
This is a very... strange car. It has very soft suspension, bad handling
and the acceleration is not so good either. But it is a fun car that you get
after completing 3000 km.

Inky
Eh... after driving 3000 km, this game gets pretty unserious... If you win
the Pac-Man race with the Pac-Man car you get four ghosts racing on scooters.
I haven't cared that much about driving these things so i don't have that
much to say about it.

Clyde
Clyde is pretty hard to drive, just as the other scooters. It's got just
about the same performance as the other scooters.

Engine: PM-CHR4

Cylinders: 0

Grip Cars:

Soldat Rumeur
This is a cool car. It's the slowest Duel car (except for the Pac-Man cars)
but its handling is the best in the whole game. It also sounds quite fun,
it sounds like a bus! You can also see the engine when driving!

Top speed: 374 km/h

Kamata Angelus
This is the Best car in the game. This one is also a classic RR car. It was
the special car in RRR. The only thing that I can complain about is the
handling. It has very good handlig, but sometimes its back just loses its
grip, wich makes it slam into a wall or something. Oh, and one more thing...
THIS CAR IS FAST!!!

It drives about the same as the other scooters, but this is a grip car.
