When I looked for a Riddick Bowe Boxing FAQ there was none, so I decided to write one. It was the first to feature fighters in the 2D horizontal perspective. Somewhat mirrored after Evander Holyfield's "Real Deal" Boxing for the Sega Genesis, it still managed to offer gamers a unique fighting experience. Although the game has more of an arcadish feel to it, it still manages to include some of the simulation elements that we have been accustomed to seeing in games of this genre. The career mode allows you to customize and tailor your own boxer to your liking. After your fighter is created, your ready for some action. Like most boxing games, you have to work your way up the rankings for the ultimate prize, a shot at the champion. This game also contains exhibition modes, a staple in pretty much all games of this category. All in all, Riddick Bowe Boxing was a solid title. It raised the bar, as far as boxing games were concerned, for future games. It also vastly improved upon some of its boxing predecessors on the GameBoy (George Foreman's KO Boxing & Heavyweight Championship Boxing). This game was also released for the Super Nintendo and the GameGear. _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Story _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ (From the Manual) In one of the most ferocious title fights in boxing history, "Big Daddy" pounded "The Real Deal" raw to become the undisputed WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World. For 12 grueling rounds, the 6'5", 235 pound Bowe rocked Evander Holyfield with flurries of ripping jabs, thunderous uppercuts, and battering ram hooks. But Holyfield held his ground...until the 11th when a stunning Bowe triple-shot sent Evander to his knees for the mandatory eight count. In the final three minutes, a valiant effort by Holyfield to save his fading title failed, and Holyfield was forced to resign his belt to the younger, more deserving Bowe. For the new champ, who longed as a champ to become the next Muhammad Ali, victory was a dream come true. And like his boyhood idol, Bowe had a championship demeanor that extends far beyond the confines of the ring. Between training for his first title defense, wrestling with his three children, and rattling off impressions of everyone from George Bush to Richard Pryor, the 26 year-old champ use his own experience overcoming the odds to inspire today's youth. And now, standing on top of the world with two championship belts and a perfect 34-0 record, Riddick Bowe waits...for you! _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Controls _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Up : Used in conjunction with A and B to throw uppercuts Down : Used to go into a crouch Left : Used to move away from your opponent Right : Used to move toward your opponent A : Used to throw a right jab to the head B : Used to throw a left jab to the head A + B : Used to put up a two armed block A + B + D-Pad : Used to get off the canvas when knocked down. Choose your boxer first and then choose a boxer for the computer. ================ 2 Player Match ================ This mode is similar to the 1 Player Match except you can fight against a friend. You each need to have your own GameBoy and the game for this mode. ============== Begin Career ============== This is the mode where you can try to capture the title. You have to work from the 25th rank all the way up to Riddick Bowe to get it. When you select this mode you will be prompted with a Create A Boxer screen. Here you can customize the fighter's name, his head type, his skin tone, and his stats. =============== Resume Career =============== This is where you can continue an old career. You need to have the boxer's name and a password to resume your career. _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Career Mode _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ================ Create A Boxer ================ After you select "Begin Career" from the main menu you will have to create your own boxer. You can customize the following options: Name, Head, Skin, Power, Speed, and Stamina. After you are satisfied with your stats press Start. You will then be given your boxer's name and a password. You can write these down to fight later or you can go right into your first fight. You start off the 25th rank. You can now choose your opponent, but you can only fight the next ranked fighter or the fighter two ranks ahead of you. ========== Training ========== After each fight in Career Mode, you can go to the gym and replenish your skill points. You can select any of the items based on what skill you want to increase. You can see how much they will affect your current stats by looking at the top of the screen. =================== Challenge Matches =================== Challenge matches are computer-selected bouts that allow you to redeem yourself when you lose two fights in a row, or lose once when ranked 10th or better. You must continue to fight challenge matches until you defeat a Challenge-ranked fighter. ==================== Aging And Retiring ==================== The more fights you have, the more you will age — as do all the other boxers in contention. After your 40th fight the Boxing Commission will forcibly retire you. You will be retired if you lose a Challenge Match with a fighter ranked 21 or lower. You may also be retired if you lose twice in a row against the lowest-ranked fighters. ========= Scoring ========= Scoring is based on the number of punches that connect, with uppercuts counting the most, hooks next and jabs the least. If you hit the canvas anytime during the round, your score for that round will be automatically lower than your opponent's score. You can also lose points for retreating from your opponent during the round. _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Strategy _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ================== Before The Fight ================== - Before you start a career you might want to hone your skills in exhibition matches. Start off by choosing Riddick Bowe for yourself and then choose a boxer in the lower ranks (20-25) for your opponent. This will give you some experience in throwing punches and defending yourself. When you feel you're ready, begin a career. - When you are creating your boxer, keep the stats balanced. It's not a good idea to build up one stat and neglect the others. To start off you might want to add a little more power to give you a hand with the first few fighters. - When choosing your opponent make sure you are evenly matched. If the fighter has a lot more power, speed, or stamina than you, you probably won't win. Fight opponents that are ranked below you until you are evenly matched with the next guy. ================== During The Fight ================== - Start off by throwing jabs and hooks to make your opponent vulnerable. Land a shot to the body and when their guard goes down come up with an uppercut. This is the most effective way of boxing. - Don't limit yourself to just throwing jabs, though. Remember when the round is scored uppercuts are worth the most, hooks next, and jabs last. Uppercuts are hard to land, so try sticking to the above strategy. - Don't back up or runaway from your opponent. This will not only hurt your score, but it will also put you in more trouble by backing you in a corner. If your opponent is hitting you with some good shots, try to counterpunch with a hook. If this is not working put up a block (A+B). - If an opponent taunts you, quickly land a jab to the body and come up with an uppercut. This simple combination takes a sizable amount of energy from your opponent. ================= After The Fight ================= - When training, pick the method that best suits your needs. If your boxer needs a lot more power, choose the heavy bag or the free weights. If he needs a lot more speed, choose the speed bag or the speed boots. If you want an all around workout choose either the multi gym or the jump rope. - If you lose a fight, you probably were not evenly matched. You should fight a lower ranked fighter to help build your fighter up. Having a rematch right after isn't wise. _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Boxers _______________________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Rank : 1 Name : Riddick Bowe Record: 33-0 Rank : 2 Name : Steve Thompson Record: 25-5 Rank : 3 Name : Ice Ian Irwin Record: 16-5 Rank : 4 Name : Dwaine Edwards Record: 18-10 Rank : 5 Name : Ivan Horn Record: 21-5 Rank : 6 Name : Chris MacGee Record: 23-9 Rank : 7 Name : Jose Lopez Record: 17-7 Rank : 8 Name : E.
