Basically this guide is meant to clear up a lot of the confusion about
unlocking the secrets in this game.

There are a few things that can be unlocked in this game, first there
are new characters, second there are new multiplayer stages, and finally
there are some extra things like a sound test, extra modes, and other
things.

==========
CHARACTERS
==========

When you first start up the game you should notice the 5 question mark
blocks on the character select screen. These will occupy hidden
characters but so will 6 other unmarked squares, bring the total of
playable characters (that anyone knows of so far) to 25.

Dr. Mario - Beat classic mode on any difficulty, with any number of
            lives, and any number of continues with Mario to be
            challenged by Dr. Mario. Beat him to unlock him.

Falco - Clear the 100 Man Melee, an easy way to do this is do just use
DK's down+B move until you win. You could also use Link's up+B move, or
Kirby's up+B move. Either way Falco will challenge you, then you can
beat him to unlock him.

Ganondorf - Beat event #29 (Triforce Gathering) and he will challenge
            you, beat him to unlock him.

Jigglypuff - Beat adventure mode or classic mode with any character on
             any difficulty. Pretty easy to get, once he challenges
             you beat him to unlock him.

Luigi - Play adventure mode, in the first (Mario Bros.) stage when you
        reach the goal (flag) make sure the digit that's 3rd from the
        right in your timer is a 2, the other numbers DO NOT matter,
        (##:#2:##). You will know you have done this part correctly
        because in the following cutscene Luigi will jump on mario's
        head, and in the battle that follows, Luigi will be fighting
        with Peach in place of Mario. Beat this stage and the rest of
        adventure mode and Luigi will challenge you at the end, beat
        him to unlock him.

Marth - Use all of the original 14 characters at least once in VS mode,
        classic mode, or adventure mode. Roy will challenge you, and
        you beat him like normal to unlock him.

Mewtwo - 1. Play 700 VS mode matches (not in a row, just in total).
         2. Play VS mode for a total of 20 hours (not all at once, in
            total). Also this time is divided among how many players
            are controlled by humans. So if you have just 1 human
            player, you play for 20 hours, 2 humans = 10 hours, 3 = 6
            hours 40 minutes, 4 = 5 hours.
         Once you meet either requirement Mewtwo will challenge you,
         beat him to unlock him.

Mr. Game & Watch - This guy will always be the last character that you
                   unlock. You have to unlock the other 24 characters
                   first, then clear either classic mode, adventure
                   mode with all of them. Mr. G&W will challenge you,
                   so beat him to unlock him.
                   I have heard that you can also beat break the
                   targets with the other 24 characters to unlock him,
                   but I haven't confirmed this, if anyone can be sure
                   to contact me.

Pichu - Beat event #37 (Legendary Pokmon) and Pichu will challenge
        you, beat him to unlock him.

Roy - Beat adventure mode with Marth w/o continuing, Roy will challenge
      you, beat him to unlock him.

Young Link - Beat classic mode as Link, as Zelda, then as 8 other
             characters and he will challenge you. As usual, beat him
             to unlock him.

======
STAGES
======

Brinstar Depths - Play 50 VS mode matches to unlock this stage.

Fourside - Play 100 VS mode matches to unlock this stage.

Big Blue - Play 150 VS mode matches to unlock this stage.

Pok Floats - Play 200 VS mode matches to unlock this stage.

Mushroom Kingdom II (Subcon) - Get the Birdo trophy to unlock this
                               stage.

Flat Zone - Beat classic mode with Mr. Game & Watch to unlock this
            stage.

Battlefield - Beat All-Star mode with any character to unlock this
              stage.

Final Destination - Beat all 51 event matches to unlock this stage.
                    *I haven't done this yet*

Dream Land (N64) - Beat break the targets with all 25 characters to
                   unlock this stage.

Yoshi's Island (N64) - Get over 1300 ft in the home run contest to
                       unlock this stage. The best way I've found is
                       to use Yoshi and jump real low and use his
                       down+A move in the air (he kicks a bunch of
                       times). Doing this once should do around 33%
                       damage to the sandbag, so do it a few more
                       times, then grab the bat and smash (tap right
                       and hit A) the sandbag.

Kongo Jungle (N64) - Finish the 15 minute melee with any character.
                     I've found that DK is best (with his down+B move),
                     but you can experiment.

======
EVENTS
======

When you first start playing event mode you only have access to a few
events, but as you beat more of them, more will become available.
However a few stay hidden until certain conditions are met.

Basically unlock all characters, and most stages to unlock most of the
events. To unlock Event #51 though, you need to beat the other 50
events.

=============
MISC. SECRETS
=============

Sound Test - Beat event #51 to unlock this. *I haven't done this yet*

All-Star Mode - Unlock all 25 characters to unlock this.

Random Stage Switch - Once you have most of the stages unlocked, this
                      switch will appear that lets you decide which
                      stages you DON'T want to be included in random
                      select.
                      You DON'T need all stages to get this as I don't
                      yet have the final destination stage but I have
                      this switch.

I will try to update this FAQ whenever possible, and if anyone has any
questions about this FAQ or Super Smash Bros. Melee, feel free to email
me at fecalord@crapmail.com or ICQ at 9722762.

Also I have decided not to allow websites other than gamefaqs
(www.gamefaqs.com) to host my FAQs from now on. Please don't ask,
because I will not grant permission. It's just that too many sites
don't keep their version of my FAQ up to date which makes for a lot of
hassle in my mailbox. So if anyone sees this FAQ on any site other than
gamefaqs, please let me know and I will take care of the situation,
thanks.
