-= 1. What's New -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Version 1.1 (7/18/01): Just slightly fixed the format in the Cars section,
that's all.

Version 1.05 (6/18/01): Over a year after its initial release, I came and
reformatted part of the guide. I also renamed the "Race Cups" section to a more
appropriate "Tracks" name instead.

Version 1.0 (5/29/00): The first and probably final version of this FAQ.

-= 2. Introduction -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

F-Zero X is a futuristic racing game for the Nintendo 64, released in mid-1998.
It is very fast paced and there are many cars for you to choose from and race
against. You can race through the cups in 1-player mode, or you can race
against a friend, try the Time Trial, and some other cool modes. This game has
high replay value since there are so many different cars you can choose to race
in each of the cups. Definitely a great game to try if you haven't done so
already!

Control Stick: Steer vehicle (hold forward on the stick when in the air to
dive down quickly, pull back to stay in the air longer), move
               around menu screens

Control Pad: Move around menu screens

A: Accelerate (hold to actually move), confirm selection on menu screens

B: Use boost (you can only use this when you have energy in the energy meter),
   go back one screen

C-Down: Slow down vehicle (release A button while pressing this button to
        completely stop)

C-Up: Reverse the camera angle (camera looks backward while racing; not a very
smart thing to try in a race)

C-Right: Change camera's view of the race

R: Lean to the right (press twice quickly to activate shield), hold this
button and tap Z twice to activate the shield and spin around

Z: Lean to the left (press twice quickly to activate shield), hold this button
and tap R twice to activate the shield and spin around

L and C-Left: Not used

GP Race
-------

This is the regular mode of gameplay. You pick which difficulty level to play
in, what cup you'd like to compete in, then you pick your vehicle from
whatever's available. Then you pick the engine settings for your vehicle, then
you start the race! There are 30 cars, including your own, and you must race
and survive 3 laps to win the race. The higher your rank is when you finish the
race, the more points you gain towards your final total for the cup. There are
five races in each cup, therefore there are five chances to race well and
obtain a high score. Here is a list of how many points you'll earn for each
place you come in at the end of a race:

      1st Place: 100 points
      2nd Place: 93 points
      3rd Place: 87 points
      4th Place: 81 points
      5th Place: 76 points
      6th Place: 71 points
      7th Place: 66 points
      8th Place: 62 points
      9th Place: 58 points
      10th Place: 54 points
      11th Place: 50 points
      12th Place: 47 points
      13th Place: 44 points
      14th Place: 41 points
      15th Place: 38 points
      16th Place: 35 points
      17th Place: 33 points
      18th Place: 31 points
      19th Place: 29 points
      20th Place: 27 points
      21st Place: 25 points
      22nd Place: 23 points
      23rd Place: 22 points
      24th Place: 21 points
      25th Place: 20 points
      26th Place: 19 points
      27th Place: 18 points
      28th Place: 17 points
      29th Place: 16 points
      30th Place: 15 points

Time Attack
-----------

Here's the game mode where you can pretty much race against the clock and try
to get the fastest time for going through the race. You are the only car on the
track, so you don't have to worry about traffic slowing you down! You can
either enter Time Attack right away, or you can view the Records for each
course. As far as I know, you do not get a reward for obtaining the fastest
time in every level.

Death Race
----------

This has to be the most fun part of the game! In this mode, you and all 29 of
the other cars are just driving endlessly around a track. The objective is to
use your shield and ram into all the cars to destroy them. The added challenge
is that you should try and do that as quickly as possible. I highly recommend
you use a heavy car for this mode, preferably the Black Bull.

VS Battle
---------

In this mode, you can race against 2, 3, or even 4 players! You must have more
than one controller plugged into the system before you turn on the game to even
access this mode. Here, you can either race three laps like in a traditional
race, or you can try and race while having a high-speed slugfest! Whoever
survives until the end and goes around 3 laps first wins the race.

Practice
--------

This mode is just the same as the GP Race mode, but the only difference is that
there is no limit to how long the race is! Plus, it doesn't keep track of what
place everyone is in. This is just meant for you to get a feel of a certain
course while racing against other computer-controlled vehicles.

Options
-------

Here, you can set up some options for the game, including being able to race
the computer in VS Battle mode, allowing a destroyed human opponent in VS
Battle mode to try a slot machine, which can ruin another player's race. You
can also set the handicap level for VS Battle mode, and the sound setting for
the game (Stereo or Mono). Also, you can clear all game data, including all the
cars you've accessed, the cups you've won for each car, and any time records
you've set.

-= 5. Cars -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Here's a list of all 30 cars in the game. Not all of them will be available
when you first play the game, though. Read the Secrets section to find out how
to access more cars. Each car is also rated from A being the best, to E being
the worst. The three sections each car is ranked according to is its Body,
Boost, and Grip, and I will list what their importance is below:

Body: The better the rating for this category is, the faster the vehicle will
go and the longer it will last if hit. The heavier cars are given high
      ranks in this category.

Boost: This category shows how much a boost, when used, affects the speed of
the vehicle. There really isn't a specific type of car that gets a high
       rating for this category, though.

Grip: Obviously, the higher rated the vehicle is in this category, the better
it'll be able to turn. It can make tighter turns without spinning out
and making you lose control of the car.

In this game, there are a total of 5 cups you can play. In the beginning, only
the Jack, Queen, and King Cups are available. You can open up the Joker Cup
after you beat the original three cups on the Standard difficulty setting. To
open the X Cup, you must beat all the cups on the Expert difficulty setting.
Here, I'll give a description of each course for the 5 cups.

Jack Cup
--------

Mute City
Description: This is the very first course, so obviously it's very simple!
It is a very straightforward course with a bunch of boosters
and a loop near the end. There aren't any tight passageways
to slow you down either, so this is the easiest course you'll
                 play in this game!

Silence
Description: Here's another very straightforward level, but this level has
a ton of boosters and they'll send you around the track at
well over 1000 KPH! It can get a bit crowded in the beginning
lap or so, but once you get ahead of most of the other
racers, it'll be easy for you to win without getting caught
                 up in traffic jams!

Sand Ocean
Description: This course is different because it takes place mainly
through two tubes, where you can ride on the top or even the
sides of the inside of them! Just remember that the yellow
line is the ground, so be sure to ride on the ground when
exiting a tube or else you may fly off the track!

Devil's Forest
Description: This is a pretty easy level to race in with a couple boosters
here and there. Just watch out for when you turn because
there is a long patch of rough terrain on the outer edge of
the track and if you don't turn sharply enough, you'll ride
through that patch and your speed will dramatically decrease!

Big Blue
Description: This course mainly takes place on a long cylinder, where you
can ride on any part of it! There are many boosters all over
it, but the downfall is that if you turn too sharply or
quickly, you'll fly right off the course and lose a life!

Port Town
Description: This is the last course of this cup, and it's obviously the
most difficult for its class. You have to know how to make
tight turns and slow down during the zigzag turn to prevent
yourself from crashing into the wall! There is also a long
straightaway with a bunch of boosters, then there's a huge
jump, which is the highlight of this course.

Queen Cup
---------

Sector a
Description: This is a slightly harder level than the Jack Cup levels. It
is pretty easy except for the fact that there's a very narrow
area about halfway through and the turns can sometimes be
annoying. There are a couple of boosters around, though.

Red Canyon
Description: This course is mainly a bunch of jumps and boosters. You just
drive a little bit to pick up speed, then you go flying off
to the next part of the track. The jumps aren't too big,
except for one about halfway through the level. Don't worry,
though, because you're able to make it through all the jumps
                 just fine!

Devil's Forest 2
Description: Here's an average difficulty course. The curves in this level
can be a real pain, so I advise you don't go too fast or
you'll bounce all around the walls and lose a lot of energy
(if you're using a small car, that is)! Besides the curves,
the rest of the level is a piece of cake after you get the
                 hang of it.

Mute City 2
Description: In this level, you'll have to learn how to turn well to
survive. The curves and somewhat quick turns can be annoying,
plus some parts of the track become narrow. There is a small
jump over one of those narrow points, though.

Big Blue 2
Description: This place is big on turns and curves! This average
difficulty level is annoying at first, but once you get used
to it, you won't have as much trouble. The only real hazard
here is that for a part of the course, there are no
boundaries, so watch out or you might fall off the course
                 accidentally!

White Land
Description: This is a mix of all the previous course in this cup. This
course comes with the mean curves and turns, the narrow
areas, and the area with no boundaries! Near the end, there
are a few 'steps' which you go up one by one using the
jumping pads. You're lucky if you survive this level,
nonetheless finish in a high rank!

King Cup
--------

Fire Field
Description: The very first course of the King Cup is a bit interesting,
and it's MUCH easier than the SNES version of this level! The
main highlight here is the huge dive, then the jump over the
zigzag parts of the track in the beginning of this level!
Watch out near the end for the hill because you'll catch some
air for a moment or so. Throughout the course, the curves
aren't too bad, but there's a long stretch of rough terrain
along the middle of the track, so watch out when you turn
                 near it!

Silence 2
Description: This course is very annoying and sometimes difficult during
the first parts of it. In the beginning, there's a long turn
towards the left, which you'll need to know how to lean to
the left and turn sharply or you'll keep hitting the wall.
Also, there's a zigzag area where there is rough terrain
around as well. You must know how to make sharp turns here to
avoid the rough areas and avoid crashing into the wall too
                 much!

Sector b
Description: This level is really cool looking because of the visual
effects in some parts of it! There is a large section with no
boundaries, and the turns here can be annoying as well. There
is a good sized jump near the beginning, so it's good to pick
up speed from the booster to make it over just fine. Right
after it is a loop with no walls, so be careful!

Red Canyon 2
Description: This level is quite difficult because it is VERY narrow
throughout the entire level. You're just lucky if you can
survive through this nightmare of a level, no matter what
                 place you end up in!

White Land 2
Description: This is another annoying level, but not as bad as the
previous level (Red Canyon 2). Most of this course is through
an open half-cylinder and there are no boundaries whatsoever.
This can be annoying because the sharp turns and curves here
can easily send you out of the race! You definitely need some
skill to beat this level in a high rank!

Mute City 3
Description: This is perhaps the easiest level in this cup! There aren't
any major turns or curves here, but there are many boosters
and jumping pads. You can easily jump over the sharp turns by
using them! This is really a break from playing through the
                 really hard levels before it!

Joker Cup
---------

Rainbow Road
Description: This is the same exact Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64,
except for the fact that it takes MUCH less than 2-3 minutes
to complete each lap! Some of the turns can be annoying, so
it would help if you know how to turn quickly and stay on
track in the areas without boundaries! You can really pick up
speed in the 2nd and 3rd laps in the beginning of those laps
by using a boost right before the huge drop; you'll go flying
straight over the drop and gain major airtime and a pretty
                 high speed!

Devil's Forest 3
Description: This level is unique because of the fact that it's back and
forth. You go the length of the course on the map, then you
turn upside-down and come back around for the rest of the
lap. The turns here are a bit annoying, but you should know
how to get past them safely since you're used to them by now!

Space Plant
Description: This is a fairly easy course because there aren't any major
turns or curves. However, there is a section where you race
around that cylinder-type track, like in Big Blue. Don't turn
too sharply here or you'll be sorry!

Sand Ocean 2
Description: This course is full of hills and curves! It can get tricky at
times, so watch out while going through this course. The
really annoying part here is near the end in the covered area
because there are really tight curves and turns, and they can
really ruin your race if you're not careful!

Port Town 2
Description: The turns in this level aren't very major, but they aren't to
be taken lightly. You must be able to turn well in order to
survive through those turns. In the beginning of the level,
there's a short jump, which you can make it across easily
with or without the booster's help.

Big Hand
Description: Here's the final actual course in the game, meaning that it
is going to be very challenging! There are sharp turns, areas
with no boundaries, and even icy areas where you lose control
easily. You must be very skilled in order to survive through
the course, and in a high rank too!

X Cup
-----

This cup isn't really comprised of actual courses. If you play this cup, the
game randomly generates 6 new courses, all ranging from very easy to extremely
difficult! Since you have no way of knowing what the next course will be like,
you must be skilled in order to be prepared for all sorts of level hazards and
obstacles!
