Well, since this is my first and most likely ONLY Final Fantasy IX faq, allow me to speak more and please endure my longwindedness. Thank you! Final Fantasy IX, the ninth installment, is SQUARESOFT's last Final Fantasy for the PlayStation. The Final Fantasy series once again unleashes an enthralling saga of epic proportions with Final Fantasy IX. It brings back the traditional RPG elements [like armours] and is directed more towards a magical tale and fantasy style unlike the previous two more serious type Final Fantasies. Graphically, Final Fantasy IX doesn't show a quantum leap over Final Fantasy VIII. It seems that the Final Fantasy series has reached its peak in terms of 32-bit graphics at VIII. Final Fantasy IX uses similar graphic engine, just like Final Fantasy VIII and demonstrates the PlayStation technology to the fullest. The only noticeable difference is the inproportionate character design style by Yoshitaka Amano. 'Old' diehard FFs fans will definitely welcome Yoshitaka Amano's artworks. Nevertheless, Final Fantasy IX manages to maintain the standard set by Final Fantasy VIII graphically. Well, we can't complain too much since the PlayStation is getting 'old'. Final Fantasy IX lacks the innovations when you talk about combat, when being compared to the last few Final Fantasies, particularly VI to VIII. Analyse the combat system carefully and you will find that a lot of concepts are recycled and modified ideas in Final Fantasy IX. Well, this isn't really bad since I find that the concept behind the combat system like Trance, learning abilities etc, are very easy to grasp. Despite all these, Final Fantasy IX is definitely a great RPG for everyone. Final Fantasy IX has tons of secrets and sidequests to keep every RPG veteran satisfied and because of that, I have written this faq. This is by far the only faq that compiles almost all the secrets and sidequests in Final Fantasy IX. Furthermore, I have classified all of them into various groups like mini-games, side quests, secrets etc to make reading easier. Because of that, you will notice multiple content page. However, while using this faq, you might discover quite a lot of SPOILERS. So, use this faq at YOUR OWN RISK. I have already done my best to reduce the spoilers. With all these said, I shall proceed on to the faq. I hope that you will enjoy reading this faq. Feel free to give any comments. To participate in this mini-game, have Vivi approach the little girls who are jumping rope to the left of the ticket booth. This is a good opportunity to get some extremely rare cards, and maybe obtain a key item early in the game. Playing The Game: ---------------- After Vivi moves over the rope, press the Circle button to begin the game. Each time a '!' appears over Vivi's head, press the X button to jump. Things To Take Note: ------------------- Don't underestimate this game. The speed at which the rope moves increases at 20 jumps, again at 50 jumps and then again at 100 jumps. At 200 jumps, though the speed subsides a little bit, the timing is quite different. From 300 jumps and onwards, the timing remains the same. You can only win each reward one at a time. Even if you start over and achieve the number of jumps you have made previously, you will not receive the same reward again. Where and When To Play: ---------------------- a)You can play the mini-game at the beginning of disc one to the left of the ticket booth. b)From disc three onwards, the girls move their games to the moogle's bell tower. In disc three and four, you can ONLY play if you have VIVI or EIKO in your PARTY. Tetra Master, a brand new card game, is an addictive and innovative game. I won't really cover anything about Tetra Master in this faq. Firstly, I didn't really seriously go and play the card game. Secondly, there are quite a number of great Tetra Master faqs available at gamefaqs. I am NOT an EXPERT Tetra Master Player and if you ask me anything about Tetra Master card game, I MAY NOT be able to help you. But I will try my best. One good faq that I strongly recommend you to check it out is the Tetra Master faq written by Trifthen. There are 100 different types of cards and can be classified into Monsters, Spells, Weapons And Items, Airships, Chocobos, Castles and Special Cards. I have also listed down the column in which the card is being placed in the card menu. Below shows the complete card list. ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ |M |Column 1 | |M |Column 2 | |M |Column 3 | |0 |_______________| |O |_______________| |O |_______________| |N |Goblin | |N |Yeti | |N |Carrion Worm | |S |_______________| |S |_______________| |S |_______________| |T |Fang | |T |Mimic | |T |Cerberus | |E |_______________| |E |_______________| |E |_______________| |R |Skeleton | |R |Wyerd | |R |Antlion | |S |_______________| |S |_______________| |S |_______________| | |Flan | | |Mandragora | | |Cactuar | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Zaghnol | | |Crawler | | |Gimme Cat | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Lizard Man | | |Sand Scorpion | | |Ragtimer | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Zombie | | |Nymph | | |Hedgehog Pie | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Bomb | | |Sand Golem | | |Ralvuimahgo | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Ironite | | |Zuu | | |Ochu | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Sahagin | | |Dragonfly | | |Troll | |____|_______________| |____|_______________| |____|_______________| ____________________ ____________________ |M |Column 4 | |M |Column 5 | |O |_______________| |O |_______________| |N |Blazer Beetle | |N |Ash | |S |_______________| |S |_______________| |T |Abomination | |T |Wraith | |E |_______________| |E |_______________| |R |Zemzelett | |R |Gargoyle | |S |_______________| |S |_______________| | |Stroper | | |Vepal | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Tantarian | | |Grimlock | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Grand Dragon | | |Tonberry | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Feather Circle | | |Veteran | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Hecteyes | | |Garuda | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Orge | | |Malboro | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Armstrong | | |Mover | |____|_______________| |____|_______________| ____________________ ____________________ |M |Column 6 | |S |Column 7 | |O |_______________| |P |_______________| |N |Abadon | |E |Ifrit | |S |_______________| |L |_______________| |T |Behemoth | |L |Ramuh | |E |_______________| |S |_______________| |R |Iron Man | | |Atomos | |S |_______________| | |_______________| | |Nova Dragon | | |Odin | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Ozma | | |Leviathan | | |_______________| | |_______________| | |Hades | | |Bahamut | |____|_______________| | |_______________| |S |Holy | | |Ark | |P |_______________| | |_______________| |E |Meteor | | |Fenrir | |L |_______________| | |_______________| |L |Flare | | |Madeen | |S |_______________| | |_______________| | |Shiva | | |Alexander | |____|_______________| |____|_______________| ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ |W |Column 8 | |A |Column 9 | |C |Column 10 | |E |_______________| |I |_______________| |H |_______________| |A |Excalibur 2 | |R |Blue Narciss | |O |Mog | |P |_______________| |S |_______________| |C |_______________| |O |Ultima Weapon | |H |Hilda Garde 3 | |O |Frog | |N |_______________| |I |_______________| |B |_______________| |S |Masamune | |P |Invincible | |O |Oglop | | |_______________| |S |_______________| |S _|_______________| |A |Elixir | | |Cargo Ship | |__| |Alexandria | |N |_______________| | |_______________| |C |_______________| |D |Dark Matter | | |Hilda Garde 1 | |A |Lindblum | | |_______________| | |_______________| |S _|_______________| |I |Ribbon | |__ |Red Rose | |T | |Two Moons | |T |_______________| |C | |_______________| |L | |_______________| |E |Tiger Racket | |H | |Theater Ship | |E | |Gargant | |M |_______________| |O | |_______________| |S | |_______________| |S |Save The Queen | |C | |Viltgance | |__| |Namingway | | |_______________| |O |_|_______________| |S |_______________| | |Genji | |B |Chocobo | |P |Boco | | |_______________| |O |_______________| |E |_______________| | |Mythril Sword | |S |Fat Chocobo | |CIAL|Airship | |____|_______________| |____|_______________| |____|_______________| ======================================================================= III)Treasure Hunting In Fossil Roo ======================================================================= First of all, thanks to Eric Rosenzweig for reminding me that there is a digging game in Fossil Roo. I almost forgot about it since it was very long time again I played it. On your way from Fossil Roo to Outer Continent in disc two, you might come across a cave, where a treasure hunter awaits. I don't think there is a need for me to describe the cave in details since if you explore Fossil Roo carefully, you should be able to find the cave. [It's the place where there's lot of Gargants and you need to enter it through the Qu's Marsh in Mist Continent!!!] How To Play: ----------- Talk to the treasure hunter. He says that he will let you dig the rocks here if you give him a Potion. Agree to his request and he will lend you his precious pickaxe. You can dig in any area on the top or bottom portion of the central column. At the top portion, there's a wall that seems to be made of loose walls. Be sure to examine. Simply press the Square button CONTINUOUSLY in an area until you find an item. All the items you find will be yours. In this digging game, you will find many Ore, rare stones and medicine. Furthermore, this digging game has NO TIME LIMIT unlike the Chocobo's Hot and Cold game. Return the pickaxe to the treasure hunter by talking to him ONLY when you wish to QUIT the digging game. If you return the pickaxe to him and later on, you feel like playing the digging game again, you have to GIVE him a POTION again in order for him to give you his precious pickaxe to let you play the digging game. Rewards: ------- a)The items that you dug up are valuable than just a potion. Just lose a potion, in exchange for valuable items like Hi-Potion, Ore etc. It's a great bargain, right? Definitely!!! b)If you play the digging game, you may come across an area where you hear a sound called 'Kupo'! Isn't this the sound made by a moogle. Does that mean that there is a moogle nearby? Bingo! I won't tell you where this area is. You just have to discover it yourself. I have already given you a hint somewhere as to where the moogle is. By the way, the name of this moogle is Kuppo. What's The Use Of Finding Kuppo: ------------------------------- There's a lot of advantages for finding Kuppo. First, you get to save your game at this point. Secondly, you have the opportunity to use a tent to recover your party's HP and MP if you wish to. Thirdly, there is a Mogshop. By the way, the items sold in the Mogshop by Kuppo are the same as those sold in the Mogshop by Mogki. Mogki is the first moogle that you encounter earlier inside Fossil Roo. Fourly, Kuppo will give you the letter which you need to deliver to Kupo. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to Eric Rosenzweig for | | |reminding me about this mini-game. If not, I would have | | |forgotten about it. | |______|___________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= IV)Racing Hippaul ======================================================================= This mini-game is a good opportunity to get some rare cards, as well as getting a key item. You can only take part in this mini-game with Vivi at the beginning of disc three when you are in Alexandria. Note that if accept to see Ruby's play in disc three, the mini-games, including racing with Hippaul will end. So, accept Ruby's request only after you have played the mini-games. You can find Hippaul and his mother on the main street of Alexandria. Speak to Hippaul's mother and agree to help Hippaul to cut down his weight. [Hippaul's too fat] Thus, a race with Hippaul starts. Tap the Circle and Square buttons to run. The race ends when both reaches the finish line. Hippaul's level will increase when you keep racing with him. The higher his level is, he runs faster. For every 10 levels that Hippaul gains, his mother will give you a card. You can keep winning a card until level 70 and at level 80, you receive a key item. Actually, the maximum level Hippaul can reach is 100 but you won't get any reward when Hippaul is above level 80. So, stop when Hippaul is level 80. Here's the reward: ___________________________________ |Hippaul's Level |Reward | Athlete Queen is the key item |________________|__________________| I have one question. You can only play this mini-game when you are playing as Zidane, not Vivi. You will find the Nero brothers, Benero, Genero, Zenero in the weapon shop. [Man, these three brothers really look very identical.] The mini-game resembles a shell game. The three brothers will shuffle their positions and after shuffling, they will ask you to identify one of their brothers. If answer correctly, you can choose to continue on the game or receive your reward. However, if you identify wrongly, you lose everything. The answer's either left, centre or right. The only reward you get is gil and you can max it up to 25,600 gil. ____________________________________________________________________ |TIPS |The only tip I can give to you is to make use of the 'Start' | | |button by pausing the game. Another tip found in PlayOnline | | |is to record the game with a VCR and then play it in slow | | |motion. This makes identifying easier. But, the question I | | |want to ask is why take the trouble? | |______|_____________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for the VCR tips. | |______|___________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= VI)Chocobo Hot and Cold Game ======================================================================= The Chocobo Hot and Cold game is by far the most complex and enjoyable mini-game of all. This is just my personal opinion. I won't really spend time to cover everything about this Chocobo mini-game for a reason. You can find all the detailed information needed about this mini-game in my Final Fantasy IX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide faq, which can be found in gamefaqs. ======================================================================= VII)Blackjack ======================================================================= Watch the ending from start to the end, if not, this trick will not work. You will reach the screen which says 'The End' and you will also hear the familiar Final Fantasy 'Crystal Theme'. Now, input these codes: R2, L1, R2, R2, Up, X, Right, Circle, Down, Triangle, L2, R1, R2, L1, Square, Square. You should hear a chime, if I am not wrong. Then, press the X button to play Blackjack. [I suppose everyone knows how to play Blackjack, right? No need me to teach, right?] _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Side Quest ============ i)Chocobo's Side Quest -Chocograph Treasures -Dead Pepper Treasures -Chocobo's Revitalising Ability ii)Revival Of Mognet Central iii)Feed The Moogle Family iv)Stellazzio: Zodiac Coins v)Treno Weapon Shop Monsters vi)Frog Catching vii)Mr. Morrid's Coffee viii)Figurines ix)Friendly Monsters x)The Ragtime Mouse _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Chocobo's Side Quest ======================================================================= I won't say anything more about Chocobo. For more information, check out my Final Fantasy IX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide faq. You can find more information about: a)Finding all 24 Chocograph treasures. b)Finding all 8 Dead Pepper treasures. c)Chocobo's Revitalising Ability and MUCH MORE. ======================================================================= II)Revival Of Mognet Central ======================================================================= You can find even more detailed information about the sidequest on 'Revival Of Mognet Central' at my Final Fantasy IX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide faq. This sidequest can only be done in disc four. I will give you a brief summary of how to complete this sidequest. Steps: ----- a)Find Mognet Central. It's a big island north of Outer Continent. Use Dead Pepper on a mountain crack. b)Talk to Artemician in Mognet Central. c)Talk to Kupo in Alexandria's bell tower. d)Then, deliver the chain of letters to these moogles in this order: Atla [Burmecia] Kupo [Alexandria] | | | | Mogryo [Black Mage Village] Noggy [Daguerreo] | | | | Kumool [Ipsen's Castle] Mois [Qu's Marsh in Mist Continent] | | |________________________________| ------------> Direction Flow Read from left to right, as shown by the arrow above like a 'U' shape. To find Mois [Formerly in Ice Cavern], you need to have Quina in your party. Mois has moved from Ice Cavern to the former entrance of Fossil Roo. e)Talk to Ruby in mini-theater in Alexandria to receive a key item called 'Superslick'. f)Go to Mognet Central and hand over the key item Ruby gives you to Artemician. Mognet Central is revived and you get a Protect Ring for your efforts. ======================================================================= III)Feed The Moogle Family ======================================================================= Everytime you receive a Kupo Nut for successfully delivering a letter between the moogles, you have to return to Gizamaluke's Grotto and feed it to the father of the moogle family, Moguta. In exchange for a Kupo Nut, you will receive a random item. The random item includes items like Tent, Phoenix Pinion etc. During your 'Dead Pepper Treasures' hunting, you will receive 7 Aloha T-shirts. [It's the foaming water directly between the Mist Continent and the Outer Continent.] But, you have eight party members. You can get the 8th Aloha T-shirt by giving a Kupo Nut to Moguta in disc four at Gizamaluke's Grotto. Now, you have the full set of Hawaiian gear. Now, everyone is stylin'. So far, I haven't found a USE of these Aloha T-shirt. Maybe, it's quite cool to have them in your inventory. ======================================================================= IV)Stellazzio: Zodiac Coins ======================================================================= There are 13 Stellazzio coins scattered all over the world. The first 12 Stellazzio coins are your zodiac coins. [Hmm... I am a Virgo male.] The 13th Stellazzio coin is the hidden one and you need to find all the first 12 Stellazzio coins before you can get this. Don't worry if you have missed some of the coins earlier in the game. You can still find them later on, even in disc four. Queen Stella at Treno is a collector of these coins. She will reward you handsomely. After giving all 12 Stellazzio, speaks to her again and she senses that something is missing. Notice that one of the Stellazzio cages is empty? Say to Queen Stella that there is the 13th Stellazzio coin. To help you to find the 13th Stellazzio coin, she returns you all the 12 Stellazzio coins. Now, read the clues inscribed on the coins. Since you already have all the 12 Stellazzio coins, I won't bother to type down the clues. Take some time to think about the clues before you look at the answer below. 13th Stellazzio Coin [Spoiler] ------------------- If you assemble all the clues into one, you will discover that the 13th Stellazzio coin is up a hill above a river and beyond the darkest where the sun seems to be setting and is somewhere in the southeast. And, this place seems to be the Quan's Dwelling. _________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for assembling the clues into one. If you can defeat the monster, you will not gain any experience, AP or gil, but you will receive a prize for your victory. You must have Quina in your party to trigger this event. Agree to let Quina catch frogs. Quina can only catch frogs when they jump onto the ground out of the water. You just have to wait for them to jump out. Press the X button to catch the frog. There's really no strategy to frog catching. You just have to be patient and swift. Below shows the list of locations of the four Qu's Marsh. ______________________________________________________________ |Location Of Qu's Marsh |Description | |_______________________|______________________________________| |Mist Continent |To the west of Chocobo's Forest, | | |after crossing the bridge. | |_______________________|______________________________________| |Outer Continent |Northeast of Black Mage Village. | |_______________________|______________________________________| |Forgotten Continent |In the northern part of Forgetten | | |Continent. How much damage Quina's Frog Drop will cause, will depend on how much frog(s) Quina has caught. The amount of damage caused DOES NOT CHANGE with different monsters or bosses. Frog Drop has a 100% success rate and the formula to calculate the damage caused is: Quina level x amount of Frog(s) = HP damage For example, if Quina is at level 70 and he has caught 100 frogs, the damage that Frog Drop will cause is 70 x 100 = 7000 HP damage. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for the formula above. | |______|___________________________________________________________| Frog Regenerate --------------- It's important to know tips to help frogs to regenerate faster. Don't CATCH ALL the frogs, if not, it will take a LONG TIME for the frogs to regenerate. It could mean many HOURS. And, with ONLY FOUR Qu's Marsh in the world, it's important that you learn some tips. Here are some points that you should take note: a)The number of frogs you catch is cumulative. It means that the frogs you catch earlier still counts. b)Leave a male and female frog in the pond to let the frogs regenerate faster. c)If you leave a Golden Frog, together with a male and a female frog, the frogs will regenerate faster. d)Avoid catching the baby frogs. They will grow up to become adults. Adult frogs are easier to catch. e)Female frogs are usually brighter in colour than male frogs. f)Baby frogs are more olive-toned and are smaller. g)To distinguish the gender of the frogs, you might want to change the 'contrast' of your television. However, you can't distinguish the gender of the baby frogs, only adult frogs. ======================================================================= VII)Mr. Morrid's Coffee ======================================================================= In disc one, on your way from Ice Cavern to Dali, you might want to first head for the Observatory Mountain. An elderly man named Morrid lives inside the hut and he will reward you if you can bring him some rare coffee. [Hmm... coffee has brands too!!!] The three rare coffees are Moccha Coffee, Kirman Coffee and Burman Coffee. You HAVE to give these three coffees to Mr. Morrid before the END of DISC THREE, that is before you head to the World Of Terra. Below shows the location of these three coffees. _______________________________________________________ |Rare Coffee |Location | I didn't |_________________|_____________________________________| return to |Moccha Coffee |South Gate entrance. It is the South Gate entrance near the Chocobo's Forest. That South Gate is located on flat plains, not Mountain and from where Chocobo's Forest is, walk a little northeast and you will find it. Moccha Coffee is on the bottom right of the screen. You should see water flowing down if you are observant. Check this area. Getting Kirman Coffee: --------------------- See the table above for all the details. I don't think I have anything more to add on. Getting Burman Coffee: --------------------- The ONLY chance to get Burman Coffee is to let Zidane leave Treno DURING the CARD TOURNAMENT during disc THREE and head through South Gate to Dali. You might WANT TO get some of your PARTY MEMBERS back since you will definitely face some enemies on your way from Treno to Dali. [Please refer to the 'Home Sweet Home' and 'Good Old Days' sections in the 'Secrets [Treno]' content to find more details on how to get some of your party members back during the Card Tournament.] The Mayor is not at home during this period. You notice that the Mayor's son is sleeping on the sofa in the middle room. If Zidane makes too much noises during his movement, the Mayor's son will be awaken and you have to start your search again. Search the Mayor's desk and you will find the Mini-Brahne here. Search the desk two more times and the boy starts to say 'Zzzz'. Slowly move to the stove and search the stove to find the Mayor's Key. Next, leave the Mayor's house and go to windmill. Move around the chocobo pen to the right side to find a hidden treasure chest contains 30,000 Gil. Examine the same chest to find the Burman Coffee. ___________________________________________________________________ |TIPS |From the start of the Card Tournament in Dali onwards, you | | |will notice that the windmill in Dali has stopped spinning. | | |Enter the winmill and go upstairs. You can now get the two | | |chests that contain Cachusha and Elixir, which you can't | | |get previously. | |______|____________________________________________________________| ___________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |If you forget to get the Burman Coffee in Dali during the | | |card tournament period in disc three, you will not be able | | |to get it anymore. However, you can still get the Mini- | | |Brahne figure in disc four. Similarly, missing any of the | | |three coffees will mean that you cannot get the Mini-Prima | | |Vista. See rewards below and also the 'Figurines' section | | |in the 'Side Quest' content for more details. | |______|____________________________________________________________| Rewards: ------- Mr. Morrid said that he will mail to you the Mini-Prima Vista model ship, which he bought it in Treno's Auction house, if you manage to find all the three rare coffees to him. Head to Tantalus hideout in Lindblum to find the Mini-Prima Vista model ship sitting on the floor near the bed. This 'Mr. Morrid's Coffee' side quest is quite important, especially if you want to get the complete four figurines. The four figurines are key items and if you have them, it will improve your treasure hunting ranking. [Please refer to 'Ranking In Daguerreo' section in the 'Secrets [Daguerreo]' content for more details.] If these aren't enough, check near the cart outside his house for a Hi-Potion and also near the fence by the cliff for 135 gil. [Not really a lot, though!!!] ======================================================================= VIII)Figurines ======================================================================= The four figurines are key items that will improve your treasure hunting ranking. Completing the 'Mr. Morrid's Coffee' side quest is also a MUST since you might also find two of the four figurines during your quest. Remember the house where there's noone initially and later on, Lucella and Bunce came in later and have a conversation with Zidane? You can find 68 Gil, 97 Gil and 282 Gil and Mini-Burmecia. c)There are two ways to get Mini-Brahne. The first way is to search the Mayor's desk in Dali during the card tournament in disc three. If you forget to get the Mini-Brahne, you can still get it in disc four. The second way is to enter the Mayor's house in Dali during disc four. You notice that the Mayor is not there and his son is sleeping in the sofa. Notice that there's a ladder on the top-left of the screen? Climb the ladder to get the Mini-Brahne. d)Please refer to 'Mr. Morrid's Coffee' section in the 'Side Quest' content for more details. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to Marty Dado and pearlz | | | for telling me that you can still get | | |Mini-Brahne in disc four, even if you didn't get it during | | |card tournament period in disc three. | |______|___________________________________________________________| Problem Getting Mini-Prima Vista: -------------------------------- Many gamers have e-mailed me and asked me how to get the Mini-Prima Vista model ship. They found the Tantalus hideout in Lindblum and saw the Mini-Prima Vista model ship. The problem is they can't seem to reach the Mini-Prima Vista model ship and get it. Hmm... Honestly speaking, I haven't completed this side quest. I didn't go back to Dali to find Burman coffee during the Treno card tournament. That will mean that I will never be able to complete this Mr. Morrid's Coffee side quest unless I play the game over again. I have only played through the game one time. Currently, I still haven't had the time to play the game one more time due to busy schedule. I apologise for not being able to help you guys to find out how to get the Mini-Prima Vista. If you e-mail me again and ask me the same question, my reply will still be the same. Meanwhile, I'll try and find out how to get the Mini-Prima Vista model ship. If anyone has the answer, please tell me and I will give you credit. [Please check out the 'Frequently-Asked-Questions' section in the 'Miscellaneous' content for more details.] ======================================================================= IX)Friendly Monsters ======================================================================= During a random battle, you notice that the battle theme has changed to a sweet and melodic one. The creatures that appear will not attack you but they beg you to give them a specific jem. By agreeing to their request, you will receive tons of AP and even a useful item. There are nine such friendly monsters at various locations in the world. Things To Take Note: ------------------- 1)DO NOT attack these creatures or they will run away. 2)You DO NOT need to encounter them IN ORDER but I will strongly advice you to encounter them in the ORDER I have listed in the table. [Look at the spoils you get for each creature and you will figure why.] However, to encounter the Friendly Yan, you have to find all the other eight creatures and perform their requests first, if not, the Friendly Yan will run away. 3)Be PATIENT if these creatures don't appear. They MAY appear after you have fought a couples of battles in the area. 4)They won't give the party any Exp or Gil but they give the party a lot of AP. Before fighting them, make sure the party equips weapons and armours to let them learn skills that require a LOT of AP. This makes learning ability faster. Also, equip them with the Ability Up ability so that they can double the AP they gain. 5)Note that you must have the airship or at least a red chocobo to get to the forest where you can find Purple Jabberwock. ____________________________________________________________________ |Name |Location |Request(s) |Spoil(s) | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Brown Mu |Plains, Forest etc between |1 Ore. |10 AP, | | |Ice Cavern and Dali. | |1 Potion. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |White Ghost |Plains around Treno. |1 Ore. |10 AP, 1 | | | | |Hi-Potion | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Colour Ladybug |Around Forest outside Black |2 Ores. |20 AP, | | |Mage Village. | |Ether. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Green Yeti |The bigger forest outside |2 Ores. |20 AP, | | |Madain Sari. | |Elixir. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Green Nymph |Forest around Iifa Tree |3 Ores. |30 AP, | | |area. | |Emerald. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Purple Jabber- |Forest directly east of |Emerald. |40 AP, | |wock |Oeilvert. | |Moonstone. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Green Feather |Lost Continent, near to |Moonstone. |30 AP, Lap-| |Circle |chocobo's track. | |is Lazuli. | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Rainbow Garuda |Forest facing east after |Lapis |40 AP, | | |climbing the rope in Giza- |Lazuli. |Diamond. | | |maluke's Grotto. | | | |_______________|____________________________|___________|___________| |Friendly Yan |Forest on Vile Island. They are a valuable source for gaining huge amount of AP and it will aid you in learning skills that require high AP. Remember to equip the Ability Up ability. Another reward that you will definitely want is the 'Friendly Monsters' blessings. It increases your range of attack when you are fighting against Ozma, thus making physical attacks to Ozma possible. This is very crucial as characters like Zidane, Steiner and Amarant more useful in the battle. It is possible to beat Ozma without getting the 'Friendly Monsters' blessings. If you beat Ozma before completing the 'Friendly Monsters' side quest and then you go and encounter Friendly Yan, [Assume you have found all other eight Friendly Monsters.], it will be stunned after you give it a Diamond. it will say a line like 'reach the round guy... huh? You already BEAT him?' __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to for telling me what Friendly Yan | | |will say if you beat Ozma before encountering it. | |______|___________________________________________________________| A Cheat!!!: ---------- On the island, just outside Daguerreo, you may encounter a creature called Gimme Cat. It asks for a Diamond. You might think that it is the 10th Friendly Monsters. However, it isn't. You also notice that the usual battle theme is playing, and NOT the sweet and melodic music. If you give Gimme Cat a Diamond, it will run away, giving you NOTHING, so DON'T give it ANYTHING. It WILL NOT attack you initially but if you attack it first, it will get angry and start to attack you with comet. Defeat it and it gives you 4 Exp and 5000 Gil. Not advisable to beat since it's a waste of time but it's a good chance to earn gil, especially when the Millionaire ability is equipped. If not, choose to run away or use Zidane's Flee ability. Not Friendly???: --------------- You may encounter 'Not Friendly' versions of these friendly monsters. These monsters have the same name as the 'Friendly Monsters' but then, they are just like the normal enemies that you have encountered. However, you can spot some differences between these monsters and their respective 'Friendly' versions like colour differences, skin texture differences etc. Also, take note that these 'Friendly' and 'Not Friendly' monsters are found in the same area in the world. The 'Non-Friendly' versions of Yan gives you a lot of Exp if you are able to defeat it but are not easy to defeat. [The Exp you gain is even higher than defeating Grand Dragons.] Each Yan has 19, 465 HP 3378 MP and gives you 42,673 Exp and 2218 gils. Furthermore, they may come in a set of two or three. Also, if Quina manage to eat a Yan, s/he will learn the Auto-Life ability. ======================================================================= X)The Ragtime Mouse ======================================================================= While roaming the forests, you may encounter a weird creature in a battle that asks your party true or false question. You will also realise that the battle theme has changed to a rather sweet and melodic one. The large 'Circle' symbol represents true and the large 'X' symbol represents false. You receive a percentage grade based on the number of questions that you have answered right or wrong for each correct answer. Percentage grade will be higher if you have answered most of the questions correctly. Depending on your percentage grade, you get different amount of gil. There are some points you should take note: a)The Ragtime Mouse ONLY occurs RANDOMLY in FOREST. You cannot find Ragtime Mouse, OTHER than in FOREST. b)The battle theme changes if you encounter the Ragtime Mouse. c)DO NOT ATTACK the Ragtime Mouse or he will RUN AWAY. d)To answer his question, ATTACK the correct symbol. The answer is either TRUE or FALSE. e)If answer correctly, the Ragtime Mouse will give you a certain amount of gil. If you answer wrongly, you receive nothing. f)Unlike the Friendly Monsters, you DO NOT NEED to give the Ragtime Mouse ANYTHING. Tip To Encounter The Ragtime Mouse: ---------------------------------- As you know, Ragtime Mouse appears ONLY in the forest. An example of an area where you can encounter Ragtime Mouse quite often is the huge forest outside the Black Mage Village. I found a way to encounter Ragtime Mouse. It's not a trick. Now, the chances of Ragtime Mouse appearing in the SAME forest AGAIN is not quite high. You might have to fight a few battles before Ragtime Mouse can appear in the SAME forest. First, you must have the airship. Having an airship makes travelling easier and saves time. Try to encounter Ragtime Mouse in a forest. After that, go to the airship and pilot the airship to the NEAREST forest. Walk around the new forest and enter into a random battle. Hopefully, it's Ragtime Mouse. If not, fight one or two more battles and Ragtime Mouse should appear in the next battle. Chances of Ragtime Mouse appearing is very high in a forest that you have NEVER been to or have not been to for a VERY LONG TIME. In such situations, your FIRST random battle is most likely to be the Ragtime Mouse. I hope the above information helps you. I won't say this information WORKS all the time but this is what I have observed. I manage to encounter the Ragtime Mouse CONSECUTIVELY for two to four battles by having each battle in DIFFERENT forest. With that, I completed the Ragtime Mouse side quest quite fast. Completing The Ragtime Mouse Quest: ---------------------------------- In total, a list of 17 questions have been gathered so far but it's so funny because Ragtime Mouse will only ask you 16 questions. Why is it like this? I REALLY don't know. Maybe, someone 'play me out'? Encounter the Ragtime Mouse Quest for 16 times and answer all his 16 questions. Encounter him one more time and Ragtime Mouse will be defeated. You will also receive Protect Ring for your efforts. If you answer all his 16 questions CORRECTLY, besides obtaining the Protect Ring, you will also receive 22,852 Exp and 59,630 Gil. Below are the questions asked by the Ragtime Mouse. The questions are asked randomly. Note that if you happen to spot any error in the questions and answers, please inform me. ____________________________ /The Ragtime Mouse Questions \ /______________________________\____________________________________ | No |Question |Answer | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 1 |"I Want To Be Your Canary" was written by Lord Afon. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 2 |The 15th Lindblum War started in 1600. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 3 |The theater ship Prima Vista was build in Artania |False. | | |Shipyards. | | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 4 |Lindblum Castle is larger than Alexandria Castle. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 5 |Some Mu's are friendly and won't attack. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 6 |Burkmea Cable Cars have been running for 8 years. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 7 |Only one desert exits in the entire world. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 8 |Conde Petie is a village of Goblins. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 9 |Prima Vista means love at first sight. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 10 |Treno's cafe, Card Carta, is members only. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 11 |Bobo bird is a bird that brings you fortune. |False. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 12 |You can defeat Ragtimer. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| | 13 |Chocobo Forest is located between Lindblum and South |True. | | |Gate. | | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| |*14 |Theater ship Prima Vista uses Mist as its energy. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| |*15 |The Lindblum war started in 1500. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| |*16 |Fossil Roo is an underground tunnel that connects |False. | | |Treno and Alexandria. | | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| |*17 |Lindblum air cabs operate around the clock. |True. | |____|_____________________________________________________|_________| *May not be the exact question asked by the Ragtime Mouse but the meaning is there. If you have the EXACT question, please inform me. From question 14 to 17, I have received numerous versions of it from readers so I am NOT sure how 'exact' it is. For question 16 alone, more than 20+ readers have told me but almost all the questions they give are rephrased in different forms, either missing one or two words or having one or two more words. It's a hard time choosing the so-called 'exact' question. However, for question 16 and 17, I will ONLY give credits to the person who tells me FIRST. This trick works for other Final Fantasties, Chrono Cross, Legend Of Mana and MORE. Are you fustrated of having to restart your PlayStation over and over again? Here is a trick that allows you to restart your game very quickly. Simply hold the four buttons at the top, as well as the Select and Start. In short, it is to hold L1, L2, R1, R2, Select and Start. The game will restart within seconds and the usual logo which says 'Published by Square Electronic Arts L.C.C' will appear. ======================================================================= II)Auto-Pilot ======================================================================= Final Fantasy VIII is the first FF game to have this trick. It is not surprising that this trick can be found in Final Fantasy IX. To let the trick works, when you are in the airship, which can either be the Hilda Garde 3 or the Invincible, press the Select button until you see the full view of the World Map. Point the cursor to your desired destination. Then, press the X button and choose to go to your desired destination. You notice that the airship now travels automatically. Here are some points you should take note: a)The aiership will stop when it reaches the desired destination. b)It saves time as the airship will always take the shortest possible route from where your initial location is to the desired location, just in case, you pilot your airship aimlessly. c)Auto-Pilot only works for areas that are labelled in the World Map. An example of an area that does not work is the Chocobo's Paradise. d)To regain control of the airship while using the Auto-Pilot, press the Circle button. e)While using Auto-Pilot, you can use the d-pad to adjust the altitude of the airship. ======================================================================= III)A Secret With Ruby ======================================================================= At the beginning of the game, after fighting Baku for the first time, Baku will start explaining about the first mission that you will be having and that is, to go to Alexandria and kidnap Princess Garnet. If you keep answering Baku's question incorrectly for 64 times, Ruby will then storm into the room. And, as to what happens next, you find it out yourself. ======================================================================= IV)Treno Auction ======================================================================= Remember Final Fantasy VI's auction house? Yes, it's back in Final Fantasy IX. You can do all the bidding in Treno. There are lots of key items and some powerful equipments being auctioned off. You MUST do your very best to bid for these items. Of course, money talks. Upon entering the auction house, the auctioneer will first list down all the items that are going to be auctioned off. The item will then be auctioned off one by one in ORDER. To bid, go to the stage until you see a '?' mark over Zidane's head. Then, press the X button and a menu pops up. The menu automatically reveal a price that is 100 gil higher than the previous price that is being offered. You can then adjust your bid but take note that each adjustment costs a difference of 100 gil and you MUST offer at least a price of 100 gil more than the last bid. Your opponents are those nobles sitting down and it seems that they have a lot of gil to give away. See below to see what cool items you can bid. Key Items --------- The key items offered at Treno's Auction house are Mini-Cid, Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact, Une's Mirror, Rat Tail and Magical Fingertip. Other important items that you MUST GET include Dark Matter, Thief Gloves etc. Bidding Tips ------------ The trick to offer as little gil as possible when bidding for an item, is to avoid being caught into a bidding war. If you attempt to outbid the nobles at every turn, they will keep raising their bids and as a result, you have to pay even higher price, just because they know that you are VERY DETERMINED to outbid them. The trick is to let the nobles bid among themselves for a while and when it seems like the item is about to be sold, quickly offer a price that is reasonable and is HIGHER than the last. This last-minute bid will most likely guarantee you to get the item at a reasonable price. If you allow the nobles to keep raising the price, you might not gain a profit when you resale the item. Check the resale value of the key items below. Resale Value ------------ After purchasing the key items in the auction house, it's wise to sell these items to the nobles so that you can earn a profit. Don't worry since the key items you sold, will reappear in the auction house again. When selling the key items, choose to decline their first offer and the noble will offer a higher price. The second offer is the highest price that can offer, so accept the deal. Also, take note that if you leave the auction house before the key item is sold, it will still be available the next time you enter the auction house. ________________________________________________________________ |Key Item |Noble |1st Offer |2nd Offer | |________________|_____________________|____________|____________| |Une's Mirror |Nobleman walking to- |12,000 Gil |15,000 Gil | | |wards the Cafe. | | | |________________|_____________________|____________|____________| |Doga's Artifact |Scholar in Synthesis |10,000 Gil |N/A | | |shop. | | | |________________|_____________________|____________|____________| |Griffin's Heart |Adventurer at the | 8,000 Gil |10,000 Gil | | |Cafe. | | | |________________|_____________________|____________|____________| |Rat Tail |Adventurer at the |20,000 Gil |25,000 Gil | | |Cafe. | | | |________________|_____________________|____________|____________| ____________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |Griffin's Heart must be sold to the Adventurer first if you | | |have it before the Adventurer will buy the Rat Tail from | | |you. | |______|_____________________________________________________________| ____________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |The Scholar at the Synthesis shop is an exception case since | | |he will never increase his offer to purchase the Doga's | | |Artifact from you. [What a stingy person!!! Why can't he | | |offer a higher price?] | |______|_____________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= V)Final Fantasy III Music [Japanese] ======================================================================= You MUST have the Doga's Artifact and Une's Mirror. You can bid for these two key items at the Treno's Auction house. After the world of Terra has been destroyed, at the beginning of disc four and onwards, return to Black Mage Village. Examine the gramophone at the Black Mage Village inn. You notice that the background music will change to a beautiful melody taken from the Final Fantasy III [Japanese] soundtrack and this melody continues on until you leave the Black Mage Village. ======================================================================= VI)Getting Excalibur ======================================================================= Excalibur sword is Steiner's third most powerful sword. You will definitely want this sword since it lets Steiner learn a powerful ability, Climhazzard. In disc four, return to Daguerreo. Talk to the old man near the inn in the library. The old man's last wish is to find an item called the Magical Fingertip. This key item can be found in Treno's Auction House and it might cost you a decent amount of gils during the bidding war. After getting the Magical Fingertip, return to Daguerreo and give it to the old man. In exchange, you get the powerful Excalibur sword. What If Magical Fingertip Doesn't Appear: ---------------------------------------- This situation happens to me also. The only advice I can give you is sell away ALL your key items you have purchased in the Auction house previously. [Please refer to 'Treno Auction' section for details on the resale value of these key items.] After selling these key items, Magical Fingertip should appear at the Auction. Also, bid for the key items, that you have sold again. After selling all the key items, if Magical Fingertip still doesn't appear, you might want to exit and then enter the auction house until it appears. ======================================================================= VII)Getting Excalibur II ======================================================================= Steiner's most powerful sword, Excalibur II is indeed hard to get. This sword is by far the most powerful weapon, even more powerful than Zidane's Ultima Weapon. This is a challenge to all RPG veterans and you MUST really need to be very familiar with every parts of the game. To get this powerful sword, it is inevitable that you will lose a lot of chances to get some powerful weapons, items etc earlier in the game. You might even lose the chance to play certain mini-games, fight some optional bosses, miss certain side quests etc. I haven't got this sword yet since I haven't begun my second round of playing Final Fantasy IX. You have to reach the Terrace in Memoria within 12 hours. You will encounter a boss fight there. Defeat Lich there and quickly check the second pillar from the right. You should see a '!' mark appearing over Zidane's head. This mark indicates the position of the sword, Excalibur II. If you exceed the time limit, the '!' mark will immediately disappear. Some Tips For You: ----------------- a)Know the game at fingertips to prevent wandering around aimlessly. b)Skip all FMVs. To skip a FMV, open the disc cover, then wait for the disc to stop spinning and then close it back immediately if you are using a PlayStation. If you are using a PlayStation 2, eject the disc and then close it immediately. c)Skip all Active Time Event when possible, except for the compulsory ones. d)Have minimum enemy encounter. Use Zidane's Flee ability. e)Skip all dialogues very quickly by pressing X button rapidly. Set message speed to maximum. f)Plan your game carefully like what equipments to buy or equip. g)Reset if you take too much time. h)Save when needed like after an event, visiting a town etc. Don't save too often since time is wasted when you are saving. Yeah, it takes time for the moogles to appear in the world map or 'throw' the book at you. Prepare more than an empty slot for saving. Each slot has game saves at different points of the game. If you feel you have spent too much time, at least, you have a slot with a game save that leads you to the earlier part of the game so that you can try everything again. i)Use 'Soft Reset' by holding L1, R1, L2, R2, Select and Start together if you feel that you have wasted a lot of precious time. If you want a good faq to help you get Excalibur II, I recommend that you read Etoh-21/SNOWS-san's Excalibur II faq found at gamefaqs. ======================================================================= VIII)Quan's Dwelling Reunion ======================================================================= After the destruction in Alexandria by Kuja in disc three, return to Quan's Dwelling with Quina and Vivi in your party. Quina starts to dream about food and a conversation soon takes place on the patio. I won't reveal anything about this conversation but you will meet a very important person here and learn some profound things. After the conversation, search the stopped clock on the patio to find a Running Shoes. ======================================================================= IX)Secret Of The Eidolon Wall ======================================================================= A very big secret is engraved on the Eidolon Wall in Madain Sari. I won't reveal what is this secret. Take note that you can only reveal this secret from disc four onwards and it's rather complicated, in my opinion. Steps: ----- a)Form a party with Dagger and enter Madain Sari. b)Visit Lani who is standing on Eiko's back porch. Lani will run away. c)Exit village and return with anyone, EXCEPT Dagger and Amarant. d)Then enter Madain Sari, find Lani in Eiko's back porch and talk to Lani twice. e)Go to the Eidolon Wall. f)Walk clockwise from the entrance by heading to the right. You will arrive back at the entrance eventually. g)Move just past the '!' until a chime is heard. h)Walk counterclockwise back to the entrance, just past the '!' again. i)Repeat steps f) to h) for another 8 more times. Make sure you hear a chime. j)On the ninth round, your HP and MP will all be recovered and any status abnormalities will be removed. k)Read all the paintings on the wall. You can read them in ANY ORDER. l)After reading all the paintings, return to see the Ifrit painting drawing and look for an extra message. m)You have discovered the Secret of the Eidolon Wall. ======================================================================= X)Legendary Synthesis Shop ======================================================================= Defeat Hades in Memoria and you will gain access to the Legendary Synthesis shop. [Please check out 'Hades' section in the 'Secrets [Optional Boss]' content.] Below shows the list of the items that are offered in the Legendary Synthesis Shop. _____________________________________________________ |Item |Gil |Materials | |_______________|_______|_____________________________| Pumice is one |Robe Of Lords |30,000 |White Robe, Black Robe. | of the items |_______________|_______|_____________________________| you must get |Tin Armour |50,000 |Ore, Hammer. | as it lets |_______________|_______|_____________________________| Dagger learn |Protect Ring |40,000 |Dark Matter, Rebirth Ring. | her most power- |_______________|_______|_____________________________| ful summon, |Pumice |50,000 |Pumice Piece, Pumice Piece. | Ark. |_______________|_______|_____________________________| |Garnet | 350 |Ore, Remedy. | Hammer, which |_______________|_______|_____________________________| you get for |Amethyst | 200 |Ore, Annoyntment. | completing the |_______________|_______|_____________________________| Stellazzio |Peridot | 100 |Ore, Soft. | quest can be |_______________|_______|_____________________________| used here. [Please refer to 'Stellazzio: Zodiac Coins' section in the 'Side Quest' content for details on how to complete this quest.] DO NOT use the Hammer in the Legendary Synthesis Shop. You will see an additional hidden sequence in the ending. [Your eyes got to be sharp to see the difference(s). The second ending is just a few minutes longer than the original one. Have one save file with the Hammer in your inventory and another save file without the Hammer in your inventory to spot the differences.] _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Combat] ============ i)Summoning Secrets -Boost -Atomos Summon -Odin Summon -Carbuncle/Fenrir's New Skills -Phoenix Summon -Other Summons ii)Action Ability -Thievery -Dragon's Crest -Frog Drop iii)Auto-Potion iv)Ability Up v)Dealing With Undead Monsters ======================================================================= I)Summoning Secrets ======================================================================= Boost: ----- Without equipping the Boost ability, Eidolons MAY or MAY NOT appear randomly during summon. However, Eidolons will definitely appear during the FIRST time you summon them. By equipping the Boost ability, you will be able to make Eidolons appear each time you summon. The full animation that shows Eidolons causes more damage to enemies than the one with partial animation without showing Eidolons for the SAME summon. Note that Dagger and Eiko can learn the Boost ability from Pumice Piece. ____________________ /My Personal Thought:\ /______________________\___________________________________________ |Many people complain that the Guardian Forces animation in Final | |Fantasy VIII were way too long. They said that they were SICK of | |watching the same summons over and over again. But, do they REALLY | |know that the animation has to be LONG so as to let you have time | |to TAP the Square button to BOOST your Guardian Force? Now, Square | |listens to gamers. We now have the full animation and partial | |animation but... Don't you guys feel that it's WIERD to see a | |partial animation? Out of nowhere, just comes an explosion without | |even seeing the Eidolons. I just feel rather uncomfortable seeing | |the partial animation. I would RATHER TAP the Square button to | |see the full animation than watching a partial animation. Maybe, | |it's ONLY ME who enjoys tapping the Square button. I REALLY don't | |know. It's just my opinion. Maybe, I'm one of those who enjoys | |Final Fantasy VIII thoroughly. | |___________________________________________________________________| Atomos Summon: ------------- The Atomos summon works like a demi, damaging a certain percentage of the enemies' HP. How much attack percentage it causes, will be determined by two factors: a)Full animation or Partial animation. b)No of Amethyst you have in your inventory. The formula to calculate the amount of HP it can caused is by: a)[Full Animation] = [30 + No of Amethyst]% of enemy's HP. b)[Partial Animation] = 2/3 of [Full Animation] __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for the formula above. | |______|___________________________________________________________| Odin Summon: ----------- The Odin summon has a certain percentage chance to cause an instant death to enemies. However, if Odin fails to cause an instant death to the enemies, no damage will be inflicted on them. To prevent this from happening, you have to equip the Odin Sword ability. In case, Odin fails to cause instant death, this will cause wind damage to all enemies. My advice is equip ONLY the Odin Sword ability if you are sure that you are going to let Dagger to use an Odin summon. If not, don't bother to equip Odin Sword ability. Use other summons instead. The formula to calculate this percentage chance is: Percentage Chance = [Dagger's Magic Power/4 + difference between Dagger's level and monsters' level]% a)To learn Odin summon, purchase the Dark Matter item from the Treno Auction house. b)To learn Odin Sword ability, you must find Ancient Aroma in Ipsen's Castle. Go to the room with the Odin's electrified sword chained to the black wall. There are two flower vases and three shelves. Notice that you can move the two flower vases from shelf to shelf? Rearrange the vases from shelf to shelf in anticlockwise manner, starting from the top right one. When you have done so, you notice that electrical energies will fill a vase. Check this vase out to receive Ancient Aroma. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for the formula above. | |______|___________________________________________________________| Carbuncle/Fenrir's New Skills: ----------------------------- Depending on what Add-on gem you let Eiko equipped, this might affect the effect of the Carbuncle or Fenrir's summons. Below is a list of how certain Add-on gem can affect the Carbuncle and Fenrir summons. __________________ /Alternate Summons \ /____________________\______________________________________________ |Eidolon |Add-On Gem Equipped |Spell Name |Effect | |__________|______________________|____________|_____________________| |Carbuncle |Except the three Add- |Ruby Light |Casts Reflect on the | | |on gems listed below. | |entire party. | | |______________________|____________|____________________ | | |Emerald |Emerald |Casts Haste on the | | | |Light |entire party. | | |______________________|____________|_____________________| | |Moonstone |Pearl Light |Casts Protect on the | | | | |entire party. | | |______________________|____________|_____________________| | |Diamond |Diamond |Casts Vanish on the | | | |Light |entire party. | |__________|______________________|____________|_____________________| |Fenrir |Except Maiden Prayer. |Terrestial |Causes Earth damage | | | |Rage |to all enemies. | | |______________________|____________|_____________________| | |Maiden Prayer |Millennial |Causes Wind damage | | | |Decay |to all enemies. | |__________|______________________|____________|_____________________| Phoenix Summon: -------------- Phoenix summon has the ability to cause Fire damage to all enemies as well as reviving all K.O characters. But, do you know that there's a chance that Phoenix Summon will appear and revive the party if everyone gets K.O? This percentage chance is determined by the number of Phoenix Pinion in your inventory. The formula for this percentage chance to occur is given by: Percentage Chance = [No of Phoenix Pinion/256]% __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to PlayOnline for the formula above. | |______|___________________________________________________________| Other Summons: ------------- The attack power of certain summons will increase, depending on the type and number of Add-on jems in your inventory. The more Add-on gems you have, the more powerful a particular summon is. Never sell these gems away. Anyway, even if you sell these gems away, you can only get 1 gil for each gem sold, which is really not worthwhile doing so. Below shows the link between certain Add-on gems with the Eidolons: ___________________________ |Eidolon(s) |Add-on Gem | For example, the attack power of |_____________|_____________| Shiva increases if you have more |Shiva |Opal | Opal in your inventory. Ifrit's |_____________|_____________| attack power increases if you have |Ifrit |Topaz | more Topaz and so on and so forth. |_____________|_____________| |Ramuh |Peridot | The number and type of Add-on gems |_____________|_____________| is one factor that affects the attack |Leviathan |Aquamarine | power of these Eidolons. Besides this, |_____________|_____________| the full animation or partial animation |Bahamut |Garnet | is another factor that affects the |_____________|_____________| attack power of these Eidolons. ======================================================================= II)Action Ability ======================================================================= By performing certain 'tasks', the strength of certain action abilities can be increased. Such 'tasks' take time and consistency. Thievery -------- Zidane's Thievery attack actually becomes more powerful as Zidane keeps stealing. The more times Zidane steal, the more damage Thievery causes. Eventually, Zidane's Thievery can cause up to 9999 HP of damage. The amount of damage caused DOES NOT CHANGE with different monsters or bosses. - Eva_pilot - suggested that with each successful steal Zidane makes, his Thievery attack causes an additional 15 HP damage. Because of what he says, I actually spend some time to experiment this and I discover a pattern. - Eva_pilot -'s discovery about Zidane's Thievery is CLOSE to what I have found BUT not totally correct. First, let's thank him before I tell you what I have discovered. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to - Eva_pilot - for telling | | |me how stealing affects the damage caused by Zidane's | | |Thievery. | |______|___________________________________________________________| I load one of my disc three saves. First, I let Zidane use his Thievery attack and I found out that it costs 3900 HP. Then, I let Zidane perform a SUCCESSFUL steal and then have Zidane use his Thievery attack. I record the damage. Repeat this procedure several times and you will discover a pattern. I tabulate my findings in a table, as shown below: ___________________________________________________________________ No. of Steal(s) | Damage By Thievery | Damage Difference | _________________|____________________|____________________________| ??? | 3900 HP | --- NIL --- | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 01 | 3915 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 02 | 3929 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 03 | 3944 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 04 | 3958 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 05 | 3973 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 06 | 3987 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 07 | 4002 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 08 | 4016 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 09 | 4031 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 10 | 4045 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 11 | 4060 HP | + 15 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| + 12 | 4074 HP | + 14 HP | _________________|____________________|____________________________| After letting Zidane steal for 12 times and recording down 13 values of damage Thievery causes, I have come to a conclusion. Did you notice that the damage caused after each steal EITHER increase by an additional 14 HP or 15 HP? It actually alternates between 14 HP and 15 HP. Assume that with ZERO successful steal, Thievery causes 0 HP. That will mean that Zidane needs to steal successfully between 667 times to 714 times in order for his Thievery attack to cause 9999 HP. Dragon's Crest -------------- Freya's Dragon Crest attack actually becomes more powerful as the party keeps defeating dragons. The more dragons the party kills, the more damage Dragon Crest causes. One good way is to let Quina learn the Lv5 Death, which will kill Grand Dragon instantly. Quina can learn this Lv5 Death by eating a Whale Zombie on the south shore of the Lost Continent. Eventually, Freya's Dragon Crest can cause up to 9999 HP of damage. If I am NOT WRONG, it doesn't matter if Freya is in the party when the dragons are killed. In short, the damage caused by Freya's Dragon Crest is determined by the number of dragons the party has killed. The amount of damage caused DOES NOT CHANGE with different monsters or bosses. Frog Drop --------- Frog Drop is a blue magic that Quina can learn by eating the Gigan Toad. Quina's Frog Drop attack actually becomes more powerful as Quina catches more frogs in the Qu's Marsh and when Quina's level increases. | |______|___________________________________________________________| [Please refer to 'Frog Catching' section in the 'Side Quest' content for more details.] ======================================================================= III)Auto-Potion ======================================================================= When a character is equipped with the Auto-Potion, he or she will use either a Potion or Hi-Potion on him or her whenever he or she receives a physical or magical attack from enemies. When Will The Character Uses Auto-Hi-Potion: ------------------------------------------- Whenever a character receives a damage and is equipping him or her with an Auto-Potion, he or she will automatically uses a Potion, healing 150 HP [or 300 HP if equipped with the Chemist!!!] on himself or herself. Gradually, as you encounter tougher monsters in the battle later on, you realise that an Auto-Potion ability is too ineffective as it heals too little HP. What to do? Many might not know this. First, sell away all your Potion that you have, leaving ONLY Hi-Potion in your inventory. During combat, whenever a character receives a damage and is equipping with an Auto-Potion, he or she will automatically uses a Hi-Potion, healing 450 HP [or 900 HP if equipped with the Chemist!!!] on himself or herself. Effect Of Chemist: ----------------- Equipping Chemist ability helps to double the potency of medicinal items when these items are used DURING BATTLES. It is like saying you use up a medicinal item but this item has the effect of two medicinal items. However, the downside is NOT all characters can learn the Chemist ability. Examples are Zidane, Vivi, Quina, Eiko and Amarant. Only Dagger, Steiner and Freya can learn the Chemist ability. You can learn the Chemist ability from Barette, Cotton Robe, Grand Armour and Madain's Ring. Consumable Item: --------------- Below shows the effect of Potion and Hi-Potion used in different situations like during field, during battle etc. I hope this table below will be of some help to you. ___________________________________________________________________ |Item |Field |Battle | | | |___________________________________| | | |Without Chemist |With Chemist | |__________|____________________|_________________|_________________| |Potion |Restores 100 HP. |Restores 150 HP. |Restores 300 HP. | |__________|____________________|_________________|_________________| |Hi-Potion |Restores 300 HP. |Restores 450 HP. |Restores 900 HP. | |__________|____________________|_________________|_________________| ======================================================================= IV)Ability Up ======================================================================= You should ALWAYS equip your character with the Ability Up ability unless you have already learned ALL the abilities. [The same goes to Level Up as it lets you earn slightly more experience than usual after each battle. Millionaire ability also lets you earn slightly more gil than usual after each battle. But, I won't really talk much about these two abilities.] By equipping the Ability Up ability, you will double the AP gain during each battle. This makes your character learn abilities faster. Another Tip To Learn An Abilities Faster: ---------------------------------------- Here's a way to let you earn an ability faster. I am not sure how many people know about this. Simply equip MULTIPLE equipments that lets you learn the SAME ability. For simplicity, I stick to two equipments and I will give you examples to illustrate what I mean. For example, a)Assume Zidane has not learned the Ability Up ability yet. b)Let Zidane equip with Green Beret and Ribbon. c)Both these two equipments contain the Ability Up ability which Zidane can learn. d)Green Beret: Head Gear Equipment. Ribbon : Add-On Equipment. Case One: [Without Equipping The Ability Up] -------- Let's perform some simple mathematical calculations. Assume you recieve 1 AP after a battle. The Ability Up ability will gain: a)1 AP due to Green Beret equipped. b)1 AP due to Ribbon equipped. c)In total, the Ability Up ability gains 1 + 1 = 2 AP. Let's look at another example. Let's say you gain 2 AP after a battle. The Ability Up ability will gain: a)2 AP due to Green Beret equipped. b)2 AP due to Ribbon equipped. c)In total, the Ability Up ability gains 2 + 2 = 4 AP. Case Two: [Equipping The Ability Up] -------- Let's say you gain 1 AP after a battle. The Ability Up ability will gain: a)1 X 2 = 2 AP due to Green Beret and Ability Up equipped. b)1 X 2 = 2 AP due to Ribbon and Ability Up equipped. c)In total, the Ability Up ability gains 2 + 2 = 4 AP. Let's look at the fianl example. Now, you gain 2 AP after a battle. The Ability Up ability will gain: a)2 X 2 = 4 AP due to Green Beret and Ability Up equipped. b)2 X 2 = 4 AP due to Ribbon and Ability Up equipped. c)In total, the Ability Up ability gains 4 + 4 = 8 AP. I hope you can understand the whole process by the examples I have given. The same process NOT only applies to TWO equipments that let you learn the SAME ability. You can also have THREE or more equipments that let you learn the SAME ability if you are able to find. [Normally, it's two.] The same concept still applies. By doing this, the SPECIFIC ability will gain AP very fast and you will soon learn the ability in just a few battles. ======================================================================= V)Dealing With Undead Monsters ======================================================================= Final Fantasy veterans may remember this while newbies to Final Fantasy may most likely do not know this. In fact, this technique applies to some other RPGs, other than Final Fantasy. When fighting against undead monsters, use healing magics like Cure, Cura and maybe, Curaga, Life and Full-Life on them. Don't worry! It will not heal them, instead do tremendous damage on them. If you cast life on these undead monsters, you will kill them instantly. Healing items like Phoenix Down, Hi-Potion, Elixir [Too expensive to use, so don't use!!!] also cause damage to the undead monsters. AAlso, when in Zombie status, your character turns darker colour. Never use any healing items and magic as it WILL also CAUSE damage to them, and maybe even killing them instantly. Instead, use a Magic Tag to remove the zombie status. An example of an area where you can find a lot of undead monsters are Iifa Tree. Enemies like Myconid Zombie, Dracozombie etc are some examples. ____________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |Never drain HP from any undead monster. The reason is the | | |draining process will be reversed. It means that instead of | | |you draining their HP, it turns up to be your HP being | | |drained by them. The same is also true if you use Vivi's | | |Osmose to drain away their MP. Vivi's MP will be drained | | |away instead. | |______|_____________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to Scott for telling me that | | |draining process will be reversed if you drain HP from any | | |undead monster. | |______|___________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to for telling me that the same | | |concept applies if you drain MP from any undead monster. | |______|___________________________________________________________| _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Optional Boss] ============ i)Tantarian ii)Quale iii)Hades iv)Ozma ======================================================================= I)Tantarian ======================================================================= Tantarian is an optional boss found in Alexandria but you ONLY have TWO chances to fight him. The first chance is in disc two when you have to rescue Dagger from Queen Brahne and another chance is in disc three when Zidane and the party arrive to rescue Dagger and Eiko. I will recommend you to fight Tantarian in disc three when you are stronger. It's hard to win Tantarian in disc two when you are weak but it's not impossible. Furthermore, at this point of time in disc two, you are only given 30 minutes to save Dagger before Queen Brahne's ship arrives at Alexandria. If you happen to miss these two chances, you won't be able to fight Tantarian anymore. [Like me, I didn't know there's such boss hidden in Alexandria. Till now, I haven't had the chance to fight Tantarian.] Disc Two: -------- After Steiner and Marcus break free of the cage and unite with Zidane and the rest of the party, you should go and find Tantarian before you find Dagger. Disc Three: ---------- When Zidane and the party arrives at Alexandria, don't HEAD UP to the top of a castle to find Dagger and Eiko first. If you do so without fighting Tantarian, you won't be able to fight this optional boss anymore. Your party now is Zidane, Vivi, Freya and Amarant. You should head to the moogle in the Knight's Guardhouse on the second floor and save first before you attempt to search for Tantarian. Where To Fight Tantarian: ------------------------ Go to the library located to the left side of the hallway. Once inside the library, stand next to the bookcase on the bottom left and you should see a book which is lying on top of this bookcase. Examine and a boss fight with Tantarian occurs. _______________________ /Boss Fight: Tantarian \ /_________________________\___________ |Level |41 | |_______|______________________________| |HP |21,997 | |_______|______________________________| The table on the left shows |MP |1,456 | the statistics of this boss, |_______|______________________________| Tantarian. You might want to equip abilities like Auto-Haste, Auto-Regen and maybe, Auto-Potion. Quale uses water-based attacks too. If | |not, let Freya perform jump. Let Amarant concentrate on doing | |physical damage and occasionally be the healer and revive any k.O | |character when neccessary. Quina can use White Wind to heal any | |wounded character and cast Mighty Guard on the party. Use Frog | |Drop if it can do a decent amount of damage. First, you will need the six Chocograph Pieces and have Choco turns gold. Then, you can find the Chocobo's Air Garden. It is also very important that you recieve the 'Friendly Monsters' blessing as it enables all your physical attacks to be able to do some damage to Ozma. [Check out the 'Friendly Monsters' section in the 'Side Quest' content for more details.] Check out the Eidolon grave, which is a huge rock on the platform [Not where Mene is standing!!!] and Mene will run toward you, sensing that there is strange presence inside there. Examine the Eidolon grave to fight Ozma. Also, before you choose to examine the Eidolon, there's a list of options for you like selecting your party members and access to the menu. Make sure you are well-equipped before you fight Ozma. LUCK is a MAJOR factor that determines your victory or your defeat. I STRONGLY emphasis the importance of LUCK. This boss is damn tricky. Upon defeating Ozma, you will get Pumice, which lets Dagger learn her most powerful summon, Ark. Mene will reward you for your victory by restoring your HP and MP and remove any status abnormalities, give you a key item called the 'Strategy Guide' and a rare card, the Ozma Card. These are the strategies that I used to beat Ozma. There may be other better strategies also. If you need help fighting Ozma, I suggest you read Heretic's Ozma faq, which can be found in gamefaqs. Use | | |Remedy on any character in Mini status or Gysahl Greens | | |on any character in Berserk status. Use Grand Lethal if | | |Zidane is in Trance mode by choosing Dyne. | |_________|_________________________________________________________| |Eiko |Let Eiko occasionally attack using Holy spell. Do NOT | | |use Madeen summon as it uses up too many MP. Let Eiko | | |be the healer by using Curaga and use Phoenix summon or | | |Full-Life to revive K.O characters. Use Esuna on any | | |character in Mini status. When in Trance mode, cast two | | |white magics in a single turn. | |_________|_________________________________________________________| |Freya |Do 9999 HP by using Dragon's Crest. If Dragon's Crest | | |cannot do great damage, equip High Jump and let Freya | | |jump. If not, don't take the trouble. Use Reis's Wind | | |if there is any character who is not equipped with | | |Auto-Regen. Use Remedy on any character in Mini status | | |or Gysahl Greens on any character in Berserk status. | |_________|_________________________________________________________| |Quina |Use Magic Hammer on Ozma. It absorbs 1 to 7000+ MP from | | |Ozma. If Ozma runs out of MP, it's a great news because | | |you won't receive attacks like Meteor, Flare etc. But, | | |Magic Hammer can sometimes play you out by absorbing | | |single digit MP from Ozma. Luck actually matters. Use | | |Quina's Angel Snack to cast Remedy on all party members | | |to cure any character in Mini status. If Quina has the | | |chance, consider using Mighty Guard and Auto-Life. | | |Casting Mighty Guard might make a great difference in | | |the outcome of the battle. By casting Mighty Guard, all | | |party members are in the Protect and Shell status. This | | |reduces the damage you receive from attacks like Flare, | | |Star Flare, Meteor etc. Use White Wind to restore HP of | | |all party members. Consider Frog Drop if this attack | | |can do great deal of damage. However, priority should | | |be letting Quina using Magic Hammer to absorb all | | |Ozma's MP. | |_________|_________________________________________________________| ___________________________________________________________________ |TIPS |By using a Dark Matter on Ozma, it can inflict 9999 HP of | | |damage on it. | |______|____________________________________________________________| _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Alexandria] ============ i)Hippaul's Secret ii)Mugger... Now, let's be the bad guy and hunt down Hippaul's hidden cards. Rat-boy Puck will take Vivi to watch the Tantalus' performance, only if Vivi agrees to be his slave. Choose to refuse him for the first time. Then, go to the bell tower and ring the bell. You will receive Hippaul's secret stash of cards, which includes the Ironite Card, Goblin Card and Forest Fang Card. You can also find some cards in these areas at Alexandria: At the Memorial Square where a statue is, search around the outer perimeter and you will find a Zombie Card, a Lizard Card and a Sahagin Card. In the areas, where the nobles are marching, search the grass close to the screen to find a Goblin Card. In the Morning Star Bar, search the table near the staircase to find a Flan Card. Beginning Of Disc Three [When you control Vivi] ----------------------- Go to the bell tower and ring the bell. You receive two rare cards, the Shiva Card and the Ramuh Card. Also, if you didn't ring the bell to get Hippaul's cards, you will also receive them, which are the Ironite Card, Goblin Card and Fang Card. Take note that this is your last chance to get these cards. You might also find Stiltzkin, hanging out with Kupo at the bell tower. For 777 Gil, you can buy a set of Phoenix Pinion, Hi-Potion and Elixir from Stiltzkin. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Ariel M. You could be mugged by Alleyway Jack and lost some gils. However, if you speak to him before he mugs you, you will discover the "Alleyway Jack"!, which is actually a brief tutorial about 'Tetra Master'. You can now play with Alleyway Jack to get some good cards. ======================================================================= III)Pet Finder ======================================================================= Beginning Of Disc One [When you control Vivi] --------------------- At the docks, you will find a child called Tom. He is looking for his cat, Mittens. Agree to help him to look for the cat. Speak to him again to learn that the cat is brown. Return to Memorial Square and you will find a brown cat behind the central statue. Tom then appears and claim the cat. Revisit Tom at the docks to receive a Bomb Card. ======================================================================= IV)Performance Of A Lifetime ======================================================================= 'I want to be your canary' is one of the most memorable scenes in Final Fantasy IX. During Tantalus' performance, Zidane and the gang will fight Baku and the others. To liven up the events, they are equipped with 'Special Effects (SFX)'. The 'SFX' are impressive. When you choose the SFX command, you notice that it costs 0 HP damage to the target. After the fight, Zidane and Blank will then begin a choreographed stage fight. You must follow Blank's lead by pressing the buttons he tells you to push. Two factors will determine your performance- Accuracy and Speed. After the stage fight, you will be told how many nobles are impressed by your stage fight and also whether Queen Brahne is impressed or not. If you get 100 nobles to be impressed with your stage fight, as well as Queen Brahne, you will receive a maximum of 10,000 gil. How much gil you will earn, will depend on how you perform. Luckily, you can keep trying even if you are not satisfied with your first performance but then you will recieve more gil if it's your first try. So, give in your best on your first try. Additional Reward ----------------- Zorn and Thorn realises that Princess Garnet is missing. They immediately report it to Queen Brahne. After Queen Brahne hears that Princess Garnet is missing, she orders Steiner to search for Princess Garnet. Steiner approaches the Pluto Knights but find that two of the Pluto Knights' clothes have been stolen. [They were naked, but not completely!!!] Immediately return and talk to Queen Brahne to receive an item. Which item you receive will determine how many nobles are impressed by Zidane's and Blank's performance. ___________________________________________ |No Of Nobles Impressed |Item Recieved | The maximum number of |_________________________|_________________| nobles I have managed | 1 to 49 Nobles |Ether | to impress so far is |_________________________|_________________| 99 nobles out of 100. | 50 to 79 Nobles |Elixir | Just one more and It's |_________________________|_________________| 100 nobles. Dagger has just ascended the throne and become the Queen of Alexandria. Dagger must hurriedly and precisely give out orders to the Knights Of Pluto. Remember in the beginning of the game, when Captain Steiner had to give orders to all of the Knights of Pluto? If you have spoken to Breireicht twice on the stairs, he mentioned a list of the knights and their personalities. Judging by their interests and abilities, Dagger should assign jobs to the suitable knights that would perform their tasks efficiently. If you do not consider the Knights' interests and abilities and give them a task that they don't like, they must not perform their tasks efficiently and that means not all the townspeople will be saved. You can tell whether the Knights like the order you give or not by their responses. If they respond enthusiastically, that means they like the task. If you give the Knights the wrong tasks, they will look very confused about their tasks. If you give all the right tasks to the Knights, you will receive an Angel Earrings, if not, you will only receive an Ether. Try not to look at the answers below. _____________________________ /Ordering The Knights Of Pluto\ /_______________________________\________________________ |Knights |Order | |__________________________|______________________________| |Weimar and Haagen |Protect the townspeople. | |__________________________|______________________________| |Breireicht and Laudo |Contact Lindblum. | |__________________________|______________________________| |Blutzen and Kohel |Gather Information. | |__________________________|______________________________| |Mullenkedheim and Dojebon |Fire the cannons. | |__________________________|______________________________| _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Lindblum] ============ i)Festival Of The Hunt _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Festival Of The Hunt ======================================================================= The 'Festival Of The Hunt' is a traditional event held by the people of Lindblum. The winner of the Festival Of The Hunt will receive the key item, Master Hunter award. In addition, depending on who wins the hunt, you will get a different item. If Vivi wins, you receive a Theater Ship Card; if Freya wins, you receive a Coral Ring and if Zidane wins, you receive 5,000 gil. So, how to win the hunt? First, you must ask yourself which item you want to get. Theater Ship Card, Coral Ring or 5000 Gil? From here, determine who you want to let him win. Let Zidane Win -------------- a)Equip Zidane with the strongest weapon, which is 'The Orge' at this point. b)Equip Zidane with the Bird killer ability. Zidane can learn the Bird Killer ability by buying the Yellow Scarf in the Synthesis shop if he has not learned it yet. You might want to consider letting Zidane to equip with the Beast Killer ability. c)In the Business district, return to the Square when the timer is around 3 to 4 minutes. Vivi is being chased by a fang. Save your buddy by defeating the fang. Then, move to the sundial square [where the item shop, weapon shop etc are] and you will fight a boss, Zaghnol. Zidane and Freya will fight this boss together. The one who defeats Zaghnol will receive a lot of points. Have Freya be the healer by using potions. If you want Zidane to win, let Zidane does the final blow to Zaghnol and this final blow must KILL this beast. This should help Zidane to secure his winning position. Let Freya Win ------------- If you want to let Freya win, follow the strategy above but let Freya be the one who defeats Zaghnol. Zidane can also choose not to fight the Zaghnol initially and most likely, it will be Freya who defeats the Zaghnol. Let Vivi Win ------------ To let Vivi win, first get to the Business District and save Vivi from the Fang. Next, return to Industrial District [Don't bother about Zaghnol!!!] and purposely put up a bad fight. Vivi will most likely to emerge the champion this way. An even easier way to let Vivi win this hunting festival is to let Zidane and Freya both fight the Zaghnol but letting them be killed this time. [Don't worry!!! It's a game so there's no game over.] When Zidane and Freya [try letting Freya to be killed first, then Zidane!!!] are both dead, Zidane and Freya are disqualified from the game and Vivi is most likely to emerge the champion. __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Stephanus Rudiyanto Natari . | | |___________________________________________________________| | |For telling me an easy way to let Vivi win the hunt by | | |letting both Zidane and Freya being killed when fighting | | |against Zaghnol. | |______|___________________________________________________________| _________________________ |Festival Monster Points | |_________________________| |Monster |Point(s) | |______________|__________| The table on the left that shows the |Mu |12 Points | 'Festival Monster Points' are directly |______________|__________| taken from PlayOnline. By watching this Active Time Event, Dagger is being mugged and lost 1000 gil to a pickpocket called Four Armed Man. Along the carpented hall, just before entering the room to the synthesis shop, Steiner meets the Four Armed Man who has stolen Dagger's money. Frightened by Steiner, he hands over the Power Belt. Save Some Gil: ------------- During the Active Time Event called 'Treno Tradition', when Dagger is being mugged, a '!' mark will appear. Press the X button when the '!' mark appears. If your timing is right, Dagger loses 500 gil instead of 1000 gil. ======================================================================= II)Obtaining Chimera Armlet ======================================================================= During disc three before Treno Card Tournament, watch the two Active Time Events called 'Memories By The Water' and 'City People'. In a scene found in the Active Time Event, Four Armed Man gives you a Chimera Armlet as he runs off. ======================================================================= III)Crime And Punishment ======================================================================= On your first visit to Treno, after returning to Dr. Tot's tower to get the Supersoft, DO NOT enter the hatch even though Dr. Tot opens it for you. Instead, just leave the tower at once and the Active Time Event called 'Crime And Punishment' will be triggered. ======================================================================= IV)Home Sweet Home ======================================================================= In disc three, before the Card Tournament in Treno, you will encounter an Active Time Event called 'How He Ended Up Here'. While viewing the Active Time Event, there will be two options for you to choose. Choose to let Vivi go home and the Active Time Event called 'Home Sweet Home' will immediately trigger after you win the first round of the Card Tournament. In this Active Time Event called 'Home Sweet Home', you will learn more about Vivi's past. Zidane is all alone during the Card Tournament. If Zidane leaves Treno, you can visit Vivi in Quan's Dwelling. A scene will be triggered at the patio where Vivi will rejoin your party. It doesn't harm to have one more people in your party. ======================================================================= V)Hippo's Prize ======================================================================= In disc three, before the Card Tournament, in the Active Time Event called 'How He Ended Up Here', if you did not let Vivi go home, an Active Time Event called 'Hippo's Prize' will be triggered. This causes Mario to appear as your second opponent in the Card Tournament. You can win the rare Namingway Card from him. [Please refer to the 'Renaming Characters' section in the 'Secrets [Daguerreo]' content for more details about the use of the Namingway Card. ======================================================================= VI)Good Old Days ======================================================================= To get Freya into your party after the first round of the Treno's Card Tournament, choose 'I won't force it out of you' to skip the Active Time Event called 'Lessons Of Life' when you are watching the Active Time Event called 'Good Old Days', then have Freya join your party outside the Auction House. However, the Active Time Event called 'Lessons Of Life' gives you a glimpse of Amarant's past. _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Madain Sari] ============ i)Eiko's Cooking. _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Eiko's Cooking ======================================================================= On your first visit to Madain Sari, you will eventually watch these Active Time Events called 'Eiko's Feelings', 'Eiko's Kitchen' and 'Eiko's Kitchen 2'. You will see that Eiko is preparing food for the party. You may wonder how much you should cook and what you should add or should not add to prepare the best meal. During a scene, Quina will come in and give Eiko some tips on cooking. [After all, Quina's an expert in tasting good foods.] So, how much food do you think Eiko needs to cook? When Eiko is listing down the people she is cooking for, make sure you count the list. That includes all the people and the moogles. And, like what Quina said, it is all right to cook slightly more. So, add one to your counting. The secret recipe lies: a)Cook enough food for 11 people. Not more or less. b)Don't season your food with Oglop! c)When Quina appears, allow the gourmand to help you. I am not sure if there's any reward if Eiko cooks a good meal. I suppose there's none but it affects the dialogues that you will get later on. For me, Eiko's cooking turns up tasting not really good because I choose the option which allows the food to be seasoned with Oglop. [I thought it is better to add some more ingredients. I guess I'm wrong!!!] Comments On Eiko's Cooking: -------------------------- As I have said before, how well the meal is cooked, will determine the dialogues that you will be having later on. Here's some points that you want to take note: a)The better the food is cooked, the longer the dialogues you will get. [You also get to learn some new stuffs.] b)If you put Oglop in, Vivi will interrupt the conversation. c)Other minor mistakes lead to small details like Dagger not calling Eiko on her use of a line from a play. d)Do everything right and Eiko will explain everything on how summoners communicate with Eidolons through their horns. ___________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to for telling me that how well the | | |Eiko's meal is cooked, will affect the dialogues that you | | |will get later on. | |______|____________________________________________________________| _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Daguerreo] =========== i)Blessing Of The Dragon God ii)Supply Problems In Daguerreo iii)An Exchange In Daguerreo iv)Renaming Characters v)Ranking In Daguerreo _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Blessing Of The Dragon God ======================================================================= Head to the entrance of Daguerreo and then examine the mosaic, which deplicts the Water Dragon God. Zidane suggests placing Ore into the fountain. For every five Ores that Zidane put inside, you will receive an Add-on gem, Aquamarine. Aquamarine lets Dagger learn the powerful summon, Levithan. Take note that this is cumulative. If you put four Ores in and come back later to put one Ore in, you will receive an Aquamarine also. So, it doesn't mean that if you put only one Ore in and not five Ores at the same time, you lose that one Ore that you put in for nothing. This is also a great chance to build up the number of Aquamarine in your inventory and increase the strength of the Leviathan summon. ======================================================================= II)Supply Problems In Daguerreo ======================================================================= In disc three, when you have the airship, head to Daguerreo in the southwest part of the world. The Weaponsmith in Daguerreo tells you that he cannot sell you anything because he is having trouble with his supplies due to the faulty lift. The faulty lift prevents the top lift from going all the way up to the second level. If you want him to sell you anything, you must first fix his problem. You will definitely want to help him solve his problem because he sells great weapons and armours. Just a level below where the Weaponsmith is, you see three levers and a man standing on the middle platform reading a book. To the right of the lever, is a staff that is leaning against the bookshelves. Head there first and examine the three levers. Here are the steps: a)Lower the left lever until you see the most bottom platform is in the same level at the bottom floor level. b)Next, examine the bottom wall and Zidane will spot a hole in the wall just above the platform. c)Examine the staff that is leaning against the bookshelves. d)Take the staff and insert it into the hole. This prevents the bottom platform from raising. e)Return to the levers and lower the right levers until the top platform is at floor level. f)Move Zidane to the top platform at the floor level and press the X button. g)The top platform then rises until it reaches the top floor. h)Speak to the weaponsmith and you realise that his problem is solved. ___________________________________________________________________ |TIPS |Return to Daguerreo in disc four and you will find that the | | |Weaponsmith will sell some new and better equipments. An | | |example is the powerful Ultima Sword which lets Steiner | | |learn the Stock Break ability, which can be purchased at | | |the weapon shop in Daguerreo in disc four. | |______|____________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= III)An Exchange In Daguerreo ======================================================================= Take some time to check the bookshelves in Daguerreo. You see the Engineer Zebolt from Lindblum, who is an expert in hydraulics near the right entrance on the second floor. To his left, two people are having a heated exchange. One is the Sales Clerk who manages the Medicine Store. Speak to the Young Man whom the the Sales Clerk is arguing with. Stand on the Young Man's side by agreeing with him everytime and he will give you the rare Flare Card. Next, stand on the Sales Clerk's side by agreeing with him everytime and she will give you the rare Meteor Card. [Hmm.. you are a 'two-headed snake' if you do that.] ======================================================================= IV)Renaming Characters ======================================================================= There are two ways to get the Namingway Card. To me, it's useless because I feel that there isn't a need to change your characters' names. But, in case you DON'T LIKE any one of your characters' names. a)Win the rare Namingway Card from Mario during the card tournament in Treno in disc three. Mario will use the Namingway Card randomly in the second round of the card tournament. However, you have to meet certain requirements in order to play the card game against Mario in the second round of the Card Tournament. [Please refer to 'Hippo Prize' section in the 'Secrets [Treno]' content for more details on how to make Mario as the second round of the opponent in the Card Tournament.] b)You can find the card inside Kuja's room by searching behind the stacked books in the left hand side of the foreground during the event in Desert Palace in disc three. ____________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |If I am not wrong, both the two Namingway Card can only be | | |gotten in disc three. If you happen to miss the Namingway | | |Card after you leave the Desert Palace, you can STILL return | | |to the Desert Palace, as long as you are on the THIRD disc | | |but you CANNOT return to Desert Palace in the FOURTH disc. | | |Therefore, you have to take the Namingway Card in Desert | | |Palace BEFORE disc four. | |______|_____________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to Wynn for telling me that you | | |can still go back to Desert Palace to get the Namingway | | |Card as long as it's before disc four. | |______|___________________________________________________________| A Guy Doing Research in the middle level of Daguerreo requests to see the Namingway Card. Show it to him and you can rename your characters. The question is how do you reach the middle level? It's quite simple actually: a)Examine the strange block, which is next to the Medicine shop. An obstruction is being released. b)Speak to the scholar at the right side who is standing near the bookshelves. He's finding a book entitled 'The Eidolon and I'. c)At the extreme right of the second floor, you will find a stack of books. Examine these books and you find that one of the books is the one that the scholar wants. Go back and speak to the scholar. After telling him where you find the book, he will move away from his current position. d)This reveals a hidden ladder that will take you to the middle level to find the Guy Doing Research. Examine the far left and far right sides of the middle level to find an Elixir on each side. To get back to the second floor, search for the '?' mark at the centre of the middle level. When you find the '?' mark, press the X button. ======================================================================= V)Ranking In Daguerreo ======================================================================= The true identity of the four-armed bandit will be revealed when you have gained a treasure hunting ranking of "S". To your Treasure Hunting ranking, simply speak to the Four-armed Man or the woman at the Treno Inn. Once you reach rank S, speak to the Four-armed Man in Daguerreo. He's standing in the room where the moogle, Noggy is. When Four-armed Man finds out that you are a Rank S treasure hunter, he will then become intimidated and he runs out of the room abruptly. Follow him to the entrance and he will then tell you about his true identity. [What's his identity? You find it out yourself. My current Treasure Hunting Ranking is only 'C' but then I have already know his identity.] After that, he will hand you the 'Rank S Award' key item. The treasure hunting ranking is determined by a point system: 1)1 point for every chest, searched Field icon, and item gained in event sequence, and every key item purchased in the Treno's Auction House [with the exception of Magical Fingertip and Pearl Rouge]. 2)2 points for every chest found on the World Map while riding on Choco. 3)No points are awarded for items found while digging in the 'Chocobo Hot and Cold' game or bought from Stiltzkin. __________________________________________________________________ |TIPS |You might also want to take this opportunity and challenge | | |Four-Armed Man to a Tetra Master card game. You can win a | | |lot of DIFFERENT RARE AIRSHIP cards from him. | |______|___________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|The information can also be found in www.playonline.com. Now assemble the narrative in a coherent manner. While there are five pieces, you only need to four to form one complete narrative story. The first three parts must be selected in chronology order and the last part can be either one of the two remaining. Don't worry if you assemble the pieces in wrong order since you can try again. Try to figure out the pieces before you look at the answer below: a)Beginning. No matter, which ending you choose, you will b)Cooperation. receive a Peridot, which lets Dagger learn the c)Silence. Ramuh summon. d)Hero or Human. _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Conde Petie/Mountain Path] ============ i)Coloured Stone _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Coloured Stone ======================================================================= After your first meeting with Eiko in Conde Petie, you pass through the mountains and head for Madain Sari. Along the way, you see some statues. Examine these statues and you will receive a coloured stones. These four stones are the Blue Stone, Red Stone, Yellow Stone and Green Stone. As to where you find these stones, I think I am not going to explain in details. If you explore all the areas carefully, you will definitely find these four stones. After finding all the four stones, return to where the moogle, Suzuna is. Take the most right paths in these three paths. You will find a different statue for you to stick all the four stones in, in this area under the tree root. In return, you will receive a Moonstone for your efforts. When the Add-on gem, Moonstone is equipped on Eiko, summoning Carbuncle will cause this Eidolon to use 'Pearl Light', which casts Protect on entire party. _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Ipsen's Castle] ============ i)Like Walking Backwards ii)Secret Combination ======================================================================= I)Like Walking Backwards ======================================================================= Notice at certain parts of Ipsen's Castle, everything is actually UP- SIDE DOWN. During battle, you may wonder why you equip your strongest weapon, yet you do pathetic damage to ALL enemies. All the damage you cause, are most likely to be DOUBLE DIGITS. Think carefully. Since this castle is upside down, why not do something that is reversed? Yes, equip your battle party with the WEAKEST WEAPON possible. The most weakest weapon will do the most damage to the enemies in Ipsen's Castle. Luckily for you, if you have already sold all your weakest weapons, you can still find quite a lot of weak weapons in the castle, which should be useful to you. ======================================================================= II)Secret Combination ======================================================================= In Ipsen's Castle, at the archway on the top balcony, there is a red carpented room. Examine the fresco at the right and you notice that it is a secret door but then it is not easy to open it. The trick is to let Zidane lean against the door but the problem is how to make the option appear? Take a while and think about it. I'll give you a hint. Choose the options in this order that starts with the first two letters. Ex ---> Pu ---> Po ---> Th ---> Pu ---> Tr ---> Re Wow, I suppose I have given too much hints. Very obvious, right? [But, at least, better than saying the word out, right?] _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Secrets [Tetra Master] ============ i)Collector's Rank ii)Five Card Masters _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Collector's Rank ======================================================================= The Collector's Rank is a number that ranges from 0 to 1700 that measures how 'prestige' you are as a Tetra Master player. Your Collector's Rank can be viewed in the Card menu. How To Get Maximum Collector's Points: ------------------------------------- If you manage to beat the powerful boss, Ozma, you will receive a key item called 'Strategy Guide'. It tells you what you must do if you want to achieve the maximum Collector's Rank and this is what it says: "You must collect cards with triangles pointing in different directions, or you can't achieve the highest rank!" =Grand Master|= a)Collect EVERY single cards. b)Each card must have unique arrow arrangement. c)Play with each card several times until all of them must have the second letter with the letter A, meaning level up the card's Attack type to A. ___________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |If you are interested in how to calculate your collector's | | |points, please refer to the Tetra Master faq written by | | |Trifthen or Final Fantasy IX Walkthrough Part I by "A" | | |Tadeo. If you already have 100 cards, the new cards that you get will be discarded immediately and the existing cards remain. You should always discard weak cards like the one with very low statistics and few arrows, to allow rooms for other rare cards. To discard a card, simply select the card to be discarded in the card menu and press the X button. There are a total of 100 different card types. If you want to have all the 100 different single cards, that means that you can ONLY have ONE card of each different card type. Things To Take Note: ------------------- a)For two cards of the SAME type, that DOESN'T mean that these two cards will have SIMILAR ARROW ARRANGEMENT and card STATISTICS. b)Raising the Card's numerical values DOES NOT CHANGE the Collector's Rank. c)You can level up a card's statistics by using the card more often in the game. However, some cards' statistics level up faster or slower than others while certain cards have statistics that cannot be raised like any of Frog's statistics or Lindblum's attack statistics. ======================================================================= II)Five Card Masters ======================================================================= In Memoria [Disc Four], in some corners and niches, a '!' mark will sometimes appear above Zidane's head. By pressing the X button, you will see Zidane shaking his head, as if he is confused. You may wonder why you find nothing even when you press the X button to search when the '!' button appears. Now, press the Square button in these areas and you realise that you can now battle with the Card Master's ghost. By playing with them, you can obtain many rare cards from them. You can purchase Save The Queen sword if you have 50,000 gil and have a Javelin and a Silver Gloves as the materials in your inventory. Only Beatrix can equip Save The Queen and noone else. The only use I have found is to let Amarant use the 'Throw' command and throw the sword at an enemy. It does cost a great deal of damage this way. Anyway, this sword is cool, right? [Please refer to 'Legendary Synthesis Shop' section in the 'Secrets [General]' content and 'Hades' section in the 'Secrets [Optional Boss]' content for more details.] _______________________________________________________________________ Content - Miscellaneous ============ i)Kalisto ii)Song Lyrics: Melodies Of Life -English -Japanese -Translation iii)Frequently-Asked-Questions iv)Credits v)Copyright Protected _______________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================= I)Kalisto ======================================================================= This is an exclusive information not found in any other faqs. Only in 'ysf' faq. According to my friend, the pirated English copy of Final Fantasy IX came out much earlier than the original English version of Final Fantasy IX. I am not sure if this applies to other countries but this definitely applies to Singapore. Somehow, places like Philippines, Indonesia also have Kalisto versions. My friend who bought the first batch of pirated Final Fantasy IX CD told me this: Everytime you play the pirated CD, you should see a nice AMIGA FONT with the word 'KALISTO'. It also has a very cool background music. It will ask you to 'PRESS ANY BUTTON!'. Press any button and the usual logo with the words 'Published by Square Electronic Arts' will appear and everything plays normally. _______________________________ /Why buy it in the first place? \ /_________________________________\_______________________________ |When my friend first saw the AMIGA FONT, he thought he had bought | |the wrong game. Hahaha!!! | |__________________________________________________________________| Here's the information that you might be interested: a)Kalisto is name of a group of hackers online that released pirated versions of games, including games for systems like Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. b)Somehow, they seem to have an 'inside man' [I act 'blur'!!! Don't go around spreading] in SquareSoft because they have Final Fantasy IX 2 weeks earlier. They also released Chrono Cross two weeks earlier than the actual release date. c)Somehow, I made a mistake that you need the AMIGA FONT in order to play the pirated Final Fantasy IX. According to The Glow, they put their 'big names' there because Final Fantasy IX is a big title. [Put their big names there? As if they haven't hurt the industry enough!!!] d)The Kalisto version should play like the normal original game, except that you will experience very frequent FMV gitches. A few examples are the sound goes bad on the South Gate with the Black Waltz on disc one, the last FMV on disc two with Garnet sitting by Brahnes grave and on disc three when the FMV shows Garnet cutting her hair. e)I heard that they translated the pirated ones from a Beta. I am not quite sure about this either. So far, my friend has spotted one translation difference in the pirated copies. For example, one of Steiner's action abilities is called Power Break. In the original English copy, it is called Power Strike. __________________________________________________________________ |NOTE |Please DO NOT e-mail me and ask me about pirated games. | | |Piracy is a rather sensitive issue so I will refrain from | | |talking about it. Yes, it's the song lyrics of Melodies Of Life, both in English and Japanese. With the success of vocal songs like Xenogears' Small Two Of Pieces and Final Fantasy VIII's Eyes On Me, Nobuo Uematsu's latest creation, Melodies Of Life will definitely bring 'Final Fantasy Musical World' to a whole new level. I have heard both the English and Japanese songs. And, I will say that the Japanese song sounds much better than English one. By the way, just to let you know, Melodies Of Life is being sung by a Japanese singer, Emiko Shiratori. The English lyrics are taken from this site: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~nstevens/lyrics/ff9.html#molj Melodies of Life [English] ---------------- Alone for a while I've been searching through the dark For traces of the love you left inside my lonely heart To weave by picking up the pieces that remain Melodies of life--love's lost refrain Our paths they did cross, though I cannot say just why We met, we laughed, we held on fast, and then we said goodbye And who'll hear the echoes of stories never told? Let them ring out loud till they unfold In my dearest memories, I see you reaching out to me Though you're gone, I still believe that you can call out my name A voice from the past, joining yours and mine Adding up the layers of harmony And so it goes, on and on Melodies of life, To the sky beyond the flying birds--forever and beyond So far and away, see the bird as it flies by Gliding through the shadows of the clouds up in the sky I've laid my memories and dreams upon those wings Leave them now and see what tomorrow brings In your dearest memories, do you remember loving me? Was it fate that brought us close and now leaves me behind? (repeat) If I should leave this lonely world behind Your voice will still remember our melody Now I know we'll carry on Melodies of life Come circle round and grow deep in our hearts As long as we remember The Japanese lyrics and the translation of the Japanese lyrics of 'Melodies Of Life' are done by Kaze Yagami Melodies Of Life [Japanese] ---------------- Ate mo naku Samayotteita Te ga kari mo naku sagashi tsuzuketa Anata ga kureta omoide wo Kokoro wo iyasu uta ni shite Yakusoku mo suru koto mo naku Kawasu kotoba mo kimetari mo sezu Dakishime Soshite tashikameta Hibi wa nido to kaeranu Kioku no naka no te wo furu anata wa Watashi no na wo yobu koto ga dekiru no? The 'Frequently-Asked-Question' section is here. Don't worry!!! I won't add too many questions unlike my Final Fantasy VIII faqs. If you have any questions that you would like to ask me, please read below. You may find your answers to your problems here. More questions will be added to the frequently-asked-question section with each new update of the faq. In future, if you wish to ask any questions, please read through this frequently-asked-question section at least once. From now onwards, I won't entertain anymore questions that can be found here in this section. However, if the questions that you want to ask can be found here and you still cannot solve it, feel free to e-mail me and tell me what your problems are. If you don't describe the problems, then I will not entertain. I hope you can understand that as I want to reduce the number of junk mails that I get almost everyday. Also, check out the TYPE OF E-MAILS that you should not SEND ME. A problem with some readers is that they TEND to ASK QUESTIONS about certain parts of the game even though they HAVE NOT REACHED that POINT yet. I get quite irritated when I receive such questions. Last Updated:30th December 2000 ============ Gameplay Related Questions: [Secrets and Side Quest, except Chocobo] -------------------------- Here is a list of questions that are related to gameplay stuffs, except Chocobo. ======================================================================= 1)Why is the key item called 'Athlete Queen' but not 'Athlete King'? [Question by ysf and answer by David Casey ] The fat kid is named Hippaul. It seems to me that these ideas were derived from a Greek Myth "Atalanta and the three golden apples" where the athlete Queen Atalanta [Origin of Athlete Queen] decrees that any man who can beat her in a foot race becomes her husband. A man named Hippocrates [similar to Hippaul...] takes up the challenge and of course, wins the race. ======================================================================= 2)After I give all the three rare coffees to Mr. Morrid, he says that he will mail the Mini-Prima Vista to you. But where do I need to go to receive the Mini-Prima Vista? My apology to everyone! I have forgotten to put this information down in version 4.0 and earlier of my faq. After you have given all the three rare coffees to him, head to Tantalus hideout in Lindblum to find the Mini-Prima Vista model ship sitting on the floor near the bed. ======================================================================= 3)I can't seem to reach the Mini-Prima Vista at Tantalus hideout after Mr. Morrid said that he will mail the model ship to you. ======================================================================= 4)I can't make Magical Fingertip to appear in the Treno's Aunction House. After purchasing these items, Mini-Cid, Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact, Une's Mirror and Rat Tail from the Treno's Auction House, sell Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact, Une's Mirror and Rat Tail away. Magical Fingertip SHOULD appear. After selling all the key items, if Magical Fingertip still doesn't appear, you might want to exit and then enter the auction house until it appears. ======================================================================= 5)What's the use of finding the eight Aloha T-shirts? Check out the section called 'Feed The Moogle Family'. I haven't really found any practical use for these Aloha T-shirts. Maybe, it's cool to have them in your inventory. I really don't know. If anyone knows the answer, you are welcomed to tell me. ======================================================================= 6)Where can I find Hades? I want to defeat Hades to gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. Please help me!!! I thought I have discussed the location of Hades very detailedly. In Memoria, you will reach an area where Quina thinks he is in the waters and he attempts to swim. After the conversation, search the right side of the screen to find a hidden area amongst the coral. Press the X button and you hear a mysterious voice. Choose not to leave and a fight with Hades soon occur. Upon defeating Hades, you gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. Be patient if you can't find Hades. If you just search the right side of the screen in the CORRECT area where Quina thinks he is swimming, I GUARANTEE that you will find Hades. ======================================================================= 7)Can you offer me some tips as to how to beat Ozma? Please refer to Heretic's Ozma faq for more details. If not, please refer to the 'Ozma' section in the 'Secrets [Ozma]' content for the strategies I used to defeat Ozma. ======================================================================= 8)What is the true-identity of the Four-armed Man? Hmm... I don't want to reveal any spoiler. Anyway, I haven't gotten the 'S' rank yet but I do know his true identity. I will give you a hint. His identity starts with a letter 'G'. I suppose the hint is so OBVIOUS that you can guess who he is. And, DON'T e-mail me again and ask me about this question or is your guess about his identity correct or not. I will NOT ENTERTAIN anymore. Despite how much I have STRESSED that I am not going to ENTERTAIN such question, I still receive several mails asking for the identity of Four-armed Man. If you have been playing many Final Fantasies all this while, you should be able to guess who Four-armed Man is VERY EASILY. If not, you just have to FIND it out yourself. ======================================================================= 9)Can you tell me where or how to get Pumice Piece? I need two Pumice Pieces to get the Pumice from the Legendary Synthesis Shop. So far, there are four different ways to get a Pumice Piece. The first way is to defeat the boss, Ark, in Oeilvert in Forgotten Continent. Do NOT ask me when or where to fight the boss, Ark as I do not wish to reveal any spoiler. Ark is a compulsory boss, whom you will fight some time in disc three. Here's the second way to get Pumice Piece. First, you will have to find Chocograph #22, which can be dug in Chocobo's Lagoon. The name of the Chocograph is called 'Outer Island 2'. The Chocograph leads to a location where you can find several treasures. One of the treasures contained there is a Pumice Piece. You also need a gold Chocobo to reach there. [Please refer to the 'Chocograph List' section in my 'Chocobo Hot and Cold guide for more details.] The third way is beat Hades and gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. You need a Hammer, a Pumice and 25,000 Gil to get a Pumice Piece. This method is not advisable since the Hammer has another very important use. [Please refer to the 'Final Fantasy IX's Second Ending' section in the 'Secrets [General]' content to find out the use of Hammer.] The fourth way is to let Zidane steal from Ozma. Equip Zidane's Master Thief ability, which could be learned from Thief Gloves [bought in Treno's Auction House.] and Bandit ability, which could be learn from Mythril Dagger, N-Kai Armlet to ensure that Zidane has a good chance of success stealing. Let's just do a recap. You can get a Pumice Piece from: a)By defeating Ark in Oeilvert. b)Chocograph Treasure - Chocograph #22: Outer Island 2. b)In the Legendary Synthesis Shop. c)Steal from Ozma. _______________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to Che Delilas , alex | | |villanova , and | | | for telling me the second way to | | |get a Pumice Piece. Yeah, I got my second Pumice Piece | | |by finding the Chocograph treasure. Man, how could I | | |have forgotten this? Anyway, special thanks to these | | |four guys. | |______|________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= 10)Where can I find Pumice to let Dagger's learn her last summon, Ark? There are two ways to learn Dagger's last summon, Ark. One way is to beat Hades and gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. You need two Pumice Pieces and 50,000 Gil to get Pumice. The second way is a bit hard. You will get a Pumice as a spoil item immediately after you have defeated Ozma. But then, Ozma is not an easy boss. Please refer to 'Ozma' section in the 'Secrets [Optional Boss]' content for the strategies on how to defeat Ozma. Let's just do a recap. You can get a Pumice from: a)Legendary Synthesis Shop. b)Defeating Ozma. ======================================================================= 11)How many ways are there to get Robe Of Lords? There are four different ways to get Robe Of Lords. You need only three Robe Of Lords since only Dagger, Eiko and Vivi can equip it. The first way is to play the Chocobo's Hot and Cold game and earn 10,000 points and exchange the points for Robe Of Lords by talking to the moogle, Mene. The second way is to play the Stellazzio: Zodiac Coins sidequest. Give the 12th coin to Queen Stella and you will receive a Robe Of Lords as a reward. The third way is to defeat Hades and gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. You need to have a White Robe, a Black Robe and 30,000 Gil to get a Robe Of Lords. The fourth way is to let Zidane steal. Bosses like Ozma, Hades and Quale carry a Robe Of Lords. Equip Zidane's Master Thief ability, which could be learned from Thief Gloves [bought in Treno's Auction House.] and Bandit ability, which could be learn from Mythril Dagger, N-Kai Armlet to ensure that Zidane has a good chance of success stealing. As for me, I got one Robe Of Lords for playing the Stellazzio: Zodiac Coins sidequest, one from the Legendary Synthesis Shop and the third one by stealing it from Hades. _______________________________________________________________ |Credit|Thanks to pearlz for telling me | | |that you can steal Robe Of Lords from Quale too. I | | |really forgot about Quale, if he has not mentioned it | | |it to me. | |______|________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= 12)I fought Ozma and I recieve 16,000 + exp but in your faq, you say Ozma will give 65,535 exp if you defeat it. Is this an error in the figures or not? No error. I didn't make any typo mistake this time. What it means is that 65,535 exp will be gained if there's only ONE character left in the party, with the other THREE members all DEAD at the END of the fight. If all the four party members are alive, all the four party members will recieve a exp of 16,383 EACH. This figure is obtained by dividing 65,535 by 4. If there's only THREE characters left at the end of the fight, with any other THREE dead, simply divide 65,535 by 3 to calculate the exp each character gains. If there's only TWO characters left, divide 65,535 by 2. I suppose everyone should be able to calculate this simple mathematical formula. I thought everyone might know it but it seems some don't. Anyway, thanks for pointing this question out to me. In fact, all the Exp gain found in ALL boss statistics in my faqs, I used the figure that shows how much Exp ONE will gain if all THREE party members are DEAD at the end of the fight. ======================================================================= 13)What's the use of the Autograph and Moogle Suit? Like everyone, I haven't found any use for these two key items. I found these two key items in Lindblum. If anyone finds any use for these two items, you are welcomed to inform me. Maybe, they serves not much purpose, other than to 'occupy' your Key Item inventory. If I am NOT wrong, I THINK these two key items also help to improve your 'Treasure Hunting Ranking.' ======================================================================= 14)I am planning to play Final Fantasy IX one more time to get Excalibur II. Can you give me a list of side quests, mini-games, secrets etc that I will be missing if I have to rush through the game within 12 hours? This is one of the questions which I choose to answer. The reason is how am I going to know what you are going to miss? The problem lies in your time management. If you think you have the spare time for side quests, go ahead and do the side quests. Nobody's going to stop you. If you think you are running out of time, then your priority should be heading towards the Memoria first. However, there are certain side quests which can only be done at certain disc. For example, you have to give Mr. Morrid all the three rare coffees before the end of disc three. Tantarian, another optional boss has to be beaten somewhere at the beginning of disc three. If you can afford the time to fight against Tantarian, do the Mr. Morrid's Coffee side quest, go ahead and do it like what I have said earlier. If you think you can't afford the time, of course, you are going to miss it. When time management is concerned, you have to rely a lot on yourself. ======================================================================= 15)When is the best time to do the side quests? I personally think that the best time to do the side quests is when you have the Hilda Garde 3 in disc three. However, there are certain side quests like the Mr. Morrid's Coffee, Tantarian boss, that needs to be completed at a certain point of the game. But, for majority of the side quests like the Friendly Monsters, the Ragtime Mouse, Chocobo Hot and Cold game etc, you should do them after getting the airship. Having an airship makes travelling to a certain place easier and of course, saves time. I actually started playing the side quests before going to Shimmering Island in disc three. This is just personal opinion. However, if you do certain side quests earlier, you may get some powerful equipments earlier in the game, which may be of some use to you. Here's an additional tip for you. It's better that you find as many Chocograph treasures and Dead Pepper treasures as possible BEFORE disc four. The reason is when you reach disc four, you notice that the whole world will be FILLED with MIST. The mist makes FINDING Chocograph treasures and Dead Pepper treasures more DIFFICULT. ======================================================================= 16)What are some of the areas that cannot be accessed to in disc four? Areas that cannot be accessed in disc four are Conde Petie, Desert Palace, Oeilvert, Observatory Mountain, Esto Gaza, Ice Cavern and Pinnacle Rocks. Therefore, if there is any treasure not taken or important stuff not done yet in these areas, better do them before you go to Shimmering Island in disc three. ======================================================================= 17)I am on my way to Shimmering island to reach the World Of Terra. Before I go there, can you tell me what are some of the things that if I don't do it in disc three, I will forever miss them when I reach disc four. Okay, I try and list some of the important things that you MUST do BEFORE disc four. a)Have you collected the Namingway Card in Desert Palace? b)Have you bought the Octagon Rod from the weaponsmith shop in Daguerreo to let Vivi learn Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga spells? c)Have you bought the Hamelin from the weaponsmith shop in Daguerreo or equipment shop in Esto Gaza to let Eiko learn Curaga, Might and Jewel spells? d)Have you bought the Heavy Lance from the equipment shop in Esto Gaza to let Freya learn Six Dragons ability? e)Have you bought the Flame Saber from the equipment shop in Esto Gaza to let Steiner learn Magic Break ability? f)Have you delivered the respective letters to Mogrika in Esto Gaza and Moolan and Mogtaka in Mount Gulug? g)Have you found ALMOST all of the Chocograph treasures and Dead Pepper treasures? h)Have you given the three rare coffees to Mr. Morrid? Esto Gaza, Mount Gulug and Desert Palace are completely sealed off in disc four. Octagon Rod can only be bought from the weaponsmith shop in Daguerreo during disc three. At disc four, the weaponsmith shop does not sell the Octagon Rod and Hamelin. A lot of readers told me that they have forgotten to buy the Octagon Rod. I DON'T think there's a way to get an Octagon Rod in disc four. The ONLY equipment that lets Vivi learn Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga spells is the Octagon Rod. So, if you didn't buy it, that means Vivi will NEVER learn these three powerful spells. ======================================================================= Gameplay Related Questions: [Chocobo] -------------------------- If you have any question that you want to ask regarding Chocobo, please refer to the 'Frequently-Asked-Questions' section in my Final Fantasy IX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide faq. ======================================================================= Non-Gameplay Related Questions: ------------------------------ Here is a list of questions that are not relevant to gameplay but you might be interested to ask. ======================================================================= 1)Do you like Final Fantasy IX? Which is the best Final Fantasies? I am not going to answer anymore such questions, which I did in my Final Fantasy VIII faqs. You can find my opinions of other Final Fantasies [V to VIII] in ALL my Final Fantasy VIII faqs. As for my opinions about Final Fantasy IX, I have discussed a little bit in the 'Introduction' section of this faq. So, I am not going to discuss anything more. If not, you can read up my reviews at gamefaqs. So far, I have reviewed Final Fantasy V to IX. ======================================================================= 2)When is Final Fantasy IX going to be out for the PC? I don't know. No official announcement has been made yet. Most likely, Final Fantasy IX is going to come out for the PC with five discs, including the installation disc. Maybe, somewhere next year in 2001. I don't know. ======================================================================= 3)Why isn't there a PocketStation compatibility for Final Fantasy IX? Don't ask me? Ask Square. Maybe Square thinks that not many people have PocketStation and it's not wise to have a PocketStation minigame in Final Fantasy IX. To me, this seems to be a good news to me because I don't have a PocketStation. ======================================================================= 4)Is it true that Square doesn't allow too much publicity for Final Fantasy IX and that they do not want publishers to release any walkthroughs for Final Fantasy IX? I heard about this news. You are right! Square felt that there's too much publicity on Final Fantasy VIII and because of that, too much spoilers are revealed. For Final Fantasy IX, they emphasise little on publicity. The ONLY English Final Fantasy IX guide sold in the market is Bradygames Official Final Fantasy IX guide. Of course, there's other Final Fantasy IX guide books as well but it's in other languages. For example, I think I saw one Final Fantasy IX guide books written in Chinese. I think it's published in Hong Kong. I'm not really sure. ======================================================================= 5)Why does the Official Final Fantasy IX guidebook sucks so much? Don't ask me! Ask the author, Dan Birlew and the publisher, Bradygames. Like I said, instead of being ENHANCED by PlayOnline, the guide book is being DEGRADED by PlayOnline. In fact, I am VERY MAD with myself for buying the Official guidebook. They should have taken more time to design the online Final Fantasy IX guide at PlayOnline. You can easily tell that the online strategy guide at PlayOnline seems to be produced in a rush. Certain pages cannot be found when you type certain keywords in. When viewing information about Chocobo in PlayOnline, it says refer to the 'map below' but there ISN'T any MAP there. It's badly designed and the frame sucks. Let's not talk about the PlayOnline first. Let's talk about the Official guidebook. I can easily spot quite a few printing mistakes in the book. They should have taken some time and check carefully before they publish the book. I have a suggestion. If they want to prevent spoilers, I suggest they release a Final Fantasy IX strategy guide CD ROM, together with the book. Then, if gamers have further questions, they can see from the CD ROM. But then, I still prefer that they put all the information together in a SINGLE book. Something must be WRONG with Dan Birlew when he's writing the book. Maybe they know that the Offical guidebook will sell because it is written for Final Fantasy IX so they don't care about the contents. Maybe, they just want to please SquareSoft for doing this. I really don't know. That's just my personal opinion. ======================================================================= 6)What is PlayOnline? PlayOnline belongs to SquareSoft. You can find more information about the site at www.playonline.com, plus information related to SquareSoft and maybe, future Final Fantasties. Upon going there, you can choose to enter a Japanese site or a North America site. There's also an online Final Fantasy IX strategy guide at PlayOnline, specifically designed to be used together with the Official Final Fantasy IX guidebook. In my opinion, the online strategy guide sucks but you can find a lot of Final Fantasy IX secrets there. By the way, you need to register to PlayOnline first. The keywords that are found in the Official Final Fantasy IX guidebook serves as a shortcut. There's also a menu there but in a javascript form. If your browser cannot view javascript, you have to know the keywords. Thanks to D. J. Jones for telling me about the menu in javascript form at PlayOnline. ======================================================================= 7)I can't log on to PlayOnline. Please help me!!! Don't ask me!!! Contact SquareSoft. I am not the one responsible for creating PlayOnline. ======================================================================= 8)Why don't you let anymore websites to post your Final Fantasy IX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide faq and Final Fantasy IX Secrets and Side Quest guide faq? The reason is I find that it is VERY HARD for me to keep track of webmasters who have been posting my faqs. Some webmasters just post the faqs but always fail to update the faq. As a result, I am very annoyed by this. Furthermore, some webmasters even refuse to seek my permission before they post my faqs. A feeling tells me that I can't trust these webmasters anymore. In the past, I used to give permission to webmasters who has seek my permission. Hmm... It would be good if more people from all over the world can find my faqs if I let more webmasters to post my faqs in their sites. But now, I realise that this idea isn't turning up well. These two Final Fantasy IX faqs can ONLY be found in gamefaqs and no other places. And, webmasters, please do not ask me for any permission to POST any of my faqs. ======================================================================= 9)Can you send me your updated faq? My most definite answer is no. If there's 1000 readers, do I always have to my updated faq to 1000 people. It will be VERY troublesome to me this way. Just go to www.gamefaqs.com and check if there's any updates in the 'What's New' section. Or, you can go and check out my contributor page at: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/1821.html You can find all the faqs I have written, including reviews at my contributor page. ======================================================================= 10)Who is the singer who sung 'Melodies Of Life'? She is Emiko Shiratori, a Japanese singer, I suppose. I don't really know much about her. ======================================================================= 11)Do you have the lyrics of 'Melodies Of Life'? Yes. I have added the lyrics of 'Melodies Of Life' in my faq. Check it out yourself. ======================================================================= 12)Can I ask you a question regarding games via ICQ? In the past, I used to answer questions via ICQ. But now, I don't. I find that it's quite annoying when I was replying e-mails but the ICQ messages keep popping up and I have to answer so many questions together. If you have any question, do not ask me through the ICQ. E-mail me instead if you have any question. One more thing. Do NOT add my ICQ number to your CONTACT list. Though I put my ICQ number at every faq, I did not expect everyone to add my ICQ number to his or her contact list. The thing is I already have a lot of contacts in my ICQ list. Those ICQ numbers which I added to my contact list, are those who are my CLASSMATES, and my PENPALS. Even if you add my ICQ number to your contact list, I won't bother to add your ICQ number to my contact list. First, I HARDLY know you well so it's unlikely that I will chat with you via ICQ. I might as well save the trouble of adding your ICQ number to my contact list. Secondly, if you have any question regarding games, you can e-mail me and ask me. ICQ will not be needed at all. I hope you can understand this. ======================================================================= E-mails That I Won't Entertain: ------------------------------ 1)Don't ask me anymore questions related to FUTURE Final Fantasies. 2)Don't ask me about superconsoles [PlayStation 2, Gamecube etc] like which game system will win the war in future. 3)Don't ask me whether there will be a day that Square will develop games for Nintendo. 4)Don't ask me about piracy games. Piracy is a sensitive issue. However, if you want to discuss about Kalisto, you can do so. 5)No chain mails. I hate all these stuffs. Forward and forward... 6)No offensive language. 7)Question is NOT SPECIFIC enough. Don't ask me a question like you can't find a PARTICULAR PLACE without telling me WHICH PLACE. 8)Question MUST be CLEAR and EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I will try and reply every mail I get but if I can't understand your question, I will not bother to reply. 9)No other LANGUAGES, except ENGLISH. I can't read these languages. I only KNOW English and Chinese. No French, no German etc. But, try not to e-mail me using Chinese. 10)Don't e-mail me and ask me for permission to post this faq in your site. You should have seen the BIG NOTICE at the beginning of the faq. 11)No discussion of ANY REVIEWS. 12)Don't e-mail me and ASK ME WHERE to buy a PARTICULAR game. ======================================================================= Sending Contributions???: ------------------------ If you plan to contribute any information, please take note of these few points: 1)Be SPECIFIC and CLEAR. If I don't understand what you are saying, I will ignore the mail. 2)Send ONLY RELATED information. For example, I have only written a FFIX Chocobo Hot and Cold guide and a FFIX Secrets and Side Quest guide. If you tell me things that are NOT RELATED to chocobo, secrets, side quests etc, I will ignore it. 3)Never send anything that is already found in my faqs, unless the information is wrong and you want to CORRECT it. 4)No other LANGUAGES, except ENGLISH. I can't read these languages. I only KNOW English and Chinese. No French, no German etc. But, try not to e-mail me using Chinese. ======================================================================= IV)Credits ======================================================================= Finally, contributors get recognition.
